Ava DuVernay & Arrow EP Developing Naomi DC Comics Adaptation For The CW

Because Wonder Girl and Painkiller weren’t enough to add to the half dozen or so DC Comics series that will still be a part of The CW lineup next year, now comes news that esteemed writer-director-producer Ava DuVernay is developing Naomi based on the comic book series written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker with art by Jamal Campbell. Naomi was a part of the Wonder Comics initiative spearheaded by Bendis in recent years.

The CW TV adaptation is being written and executive produced by DuVernay (Queen Sugar) and Jill Blankenship (Arrow) follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event rattles her hometown, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins. What she discovers will challenge everything people believe about superheroes.

THR notes that unlike the “Arrowverse” series, this show is not executive produced by Greg Berlanti, so it is unsure if or how this potential series will connect to the others.

The next TV season has a huge roster of DC series at the start of the season and at later “midseason,” including The Flash, Superman & Lois, Batwoman with a new series lead in Javicia Leslie, Black Lightning, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Stargirl, and Supergirl. Of those series, both Black Lightning and Supergirl have been confirmed to be ending with their upcoming seasons.
