Karen Kim is no stranger to taking care of other people, as her career as a psychiatrist put a lot of other people’s baggage on her shoulders. For the most part, she was able to compartmentalize, but the times when she wasn’t cost her dearly, making her burn out understandable. While Karen gave a lot of herself to her patients, and found aspects of her career to ultimately be rewarding, it was clearly time for a change, if only so she could clear her head and refocus her energy on other aspects of her life. And what better time to do so than when she’s about to bring a new life into this world?
On the season premiere of Mistresses, it’s been a year since the night Joss encountered Wilson at Calista’s and in that time, Karen has given birth to her and Alec’s child and taken up a career as an author. This isn’t where Karen thought she would be, but it’s a place of managed chaos, of deadlines and bottle feedings, and doesn’t put her under as much stress nor take as much of an emotional toll on her as her time in psychiatry. It helps that she has help from an attractive male nanny in Robert, an aspiring actor she recently hired, but what starts as a business relationship threatens to turn into something more when he makes an unwanted advance toward her. Though Karen knows all too well about the horrors of getting too close to someone with whom you share an unbalanced power dynamic, will she be willing to fire Robert for the move he makes on her? Or, having already fired several nannies in her child’s short life, is she forced to patch things up and give Robert another chance?
Elsewhere on Mistresses, Joss is having a difficult time moving past what happened with Wilson and his subsequent murder trial, while April worries about Marc’s unsteady professional life and Lucy’s budding social life.
The fourth season of Mistresses premieres tonight at 10:00 on ABC.
