Deadline is reporting that FXX has cancelled acclaimed relationship comedy Man Seeking Woman after three seasons, deeming the show’s tepid ratings performance not strong enough to support a fourth season renewal. The network has made no secret that its renewal decision-making is based on three factors – the show’s critical reception; the show’s ratings; and how the show is viewed by the network itself. If a show only has one of three, the network can override it if they think it has the potential for growth, but with Man Seeking Woman not having a breakout ratings moment, FXX likely felt it was time to move on, especially since the third season has a conclusive (and really lovely) ending.
Based on creator Simon Rich’s novel The Last Girlfriend on Earth, Man Seeking Woman told the story of Josh Greenberg (Jay Baruchel), a directionless twentysomething struggling to adapt to being back in the dating world after breaking up with a longtime girlfriend. The series separated itself from other low-key cable comedies by being incredibly interesting visually, opting to personify the metaphorical aspects of the highs and lows of love and play up the extremes in emotion that can come into play when you’re trying to find someone.
In addition to Baruchel, Man Seeking Woman starred Eric Andre (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23), Britt Lower (Casual), and Katie Findlay (The Carrie Diaries).
With Man Seeking Woman‘s cancellation, FXX’s original scripted slate includes It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, You’re the Worst, and Archer.
