The pretext in “Thin Ice” that Canada would base its claim on the North West Passage based on a sunken ship called the “Wanderer” ( The Franklin Expedition 1845 ?) is laughable. Canadian claims are based on a legitimate concern over the effects of oil spills in arctic waters on the people who have lived in Canada for thousands of years. US claims that the Northwest passage is an international shipping route would also legitimize Chinese and Russian Shipping. The US would be far better agreeing to Canada’s claim to the Northwest Passage and make and sign an agreement to allow passage of US Ships with Canadian Environmental regulations
