The group “One Million Moms” – which is in actuality probably closer to a dozen than they are a million – has decided to make FOX’s midseason drama Lucifer — based on the DC/Vertigo comic book series of the same name — their latest target.
The sensitive organization known for its homophobia involving ABC Family, Ellen and Archie Comics doesn’t like the notion of a fictionalized Devil being likable at all — even if the intention might be that Lucifer isn’t a nice guy. To stop the show, the group of concerned mothers is looking to get people to sign this petition:
FOX has plans in 2016 to air “Lucifer,” a new series which will glorify Satan as a caring, likable person in human flesh.
The series will focus on Lucifer portrayed as a good guy, “who is bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell.” He resigns his throne, abandons his kingdom and retires to Los Angeles, where he gets his kicks helping the LAPD punish criminals.
At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel Amenadiel, has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld.
Previews of the pilot episode depict graphic acts of violence, a nightclub featuring scantily-clad women and a demon.
On Tumblr, Neil Gaiman, who introduced Lucifer Morningstar in his Sandman comics, addressed the boycott.
“It seems like only yesterday (but it was 1991) that the ‘Concerned Mothers of America’ announced that they were boycotting SANDMAN because it contained Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans characters,” Gaiman wrote. “It was Wanda that upset them most: the idea of a Trans Woman in a comic book… They told us they were organising a boycott of SANDMAN, which they would only stop if we wrote to the American Family Association and promised to reform. I wonder if they noticed it didn’t work last time, either…”
The pilot for Lucifer has not been publicly screened at this point, so it is likely pointless to protest anything before they’ve actually seen it. Clearly the trailer wasn’t ungodly enough for the person who created the petition to avoid it, and now, thanks to this petition, folks who didn’t know about Lucifer suddenly do know about it.
If you’re not so sensitive, you can see the trailer below:
