CBS has confirmed that single cam Life in Pieces is set to return for a fourth season.
Despite putting up solid ratings this season, Life in Pieces looked vulnerable after not appearing in the CBS mass renewal and having its chances talked down by the Hollywood trades. The series isn’t owned by CBS and the relationship between the network and studio 20th Century Fox is purported to be tense, so if CBS loved its comedy development, Life in Pieces could’ve ended. However, Fox had every reason to keep the series going considering it needs one more season for syndication and the show has a structure that is very syndication friendly. Its ratings performance helped seal the deal, so CBS goes into 2018-2019 with two single cams – this and Young Sheldon.
What will be interesting is what CBS does with Life in Pieces. Theoretically, it should stay on Thursdays, given that it’s incompatible with their Monday comedies and it’s not powerful enough to use on something new. Plus CBS didn’t order any single cams for it to pair with, so it’s likely not a huge priority going into next season. However, CBS seems to want to shake up its comedy slate, so we could see the series on the move when the network releases its schedule next week.
Life in Pieces airs Thursdays at 9:30 on CBS.
