The Season 3 finale of Kung Fu airs on The CW and it’s called “Beginning” – and it had better be a beginning, because The CW has not yet renewed the show for Season 4. With that said, it’s a thrilling season closer that could serve as a series finale, though the audience and everyone involved see this as only the end of a chapter.

KSiteTV’s Craig Byrne spoke with Executive Producers Robert Berens and Christina M. Kim about what’s coming tonight, with much, much more to run on KSiteTV tomorrow as a post-mortem. But for now, here’s how the producers tease it:

“It’s a huge season finale, and it’s also a big payoff for a lot of stuff from the first episode of the show,” Berens teases. “It brings a lot of things full circle in ways that I think will be surprising and hopefully satisfying for viewers.”

Christina M. Kim promises “A lot of payoffs” and Easter eggs for longtime viewers who have been around since Season 1; yet, “that’s not to say that you can’t jump in and watch the finale.”

“It’s a great standalone episode,” she says.

But the big question we want to know the answer to: Was “Beginning” written as a series finale in case Kung Fu is not renewed?

“We didn’t talk about it in those terms, but we had talked about really having a satisfying finale for our audience,” Christina says. “It really felt like this was the first volume of hopefully many volumes, because there were so many storylines that we had started in Season 1, and they were kind of coming to their natural ending points; the mythology, in particular. It sort of fell into place, and probably has more resolution than most other TV finales, I would say, but it was never crafted to be a series finale, by any means.”

“I think there will be a lot of like conversation about ‘is this a series finale, or is this the season finale?’ And the truth is, I think it feels very strongly like both for us,” Berens adds. “What’s exciting is how open ended the future is for all of our characters. We’re excited that we launch everyone in these new chapters of their lives, in a way that we want to come back to. At its core, [Kung Fu] is not about the mythology. It’s not about dimensions. It’s not about resurrections. It’s about these characters in this family. So, we wanted to craft an ending that would be satisfying, but also really sets all these characters up for a new return, if we’re lucky enough to get another season.”

And finally: What can fans to to let The CW and others know that they want Season 4?

“I think fans know how to how to tweet, and how to get their voice heard,” Robert Berens says. “I think watching the finale live, DVRing it, making sure that as many people as you know are streaming on the CW app as possible… I think that’s that’s the best thing that they can do, in addition to social and tweeting their fandom for the show.”

Kung Fu “Beginning” airs TONIGHT at 9PM ET/PT on The CW. See a gallery of photos here.
