Kung Fu Interview: Eddie Liu on Henry & Tonight’s “Alliance”

Eddie Liu is part of the phenomenal cast of Kung Fu where he plays Henry Yan. Tonight’s (June 8) episode “Alliance” is a big one for Henry as some new… well… alliances are formed, and some people are going to be needed for help to stop Russell Tan – and that group of allies will include Henry’s father Daniel (Terry Chen).

KSiteTV’s Craig Byrne was able to speak with Eddie Liu about Henry’s arc thus far this season as we go toward tonight’s episode and the Season 2 finale. Come back to KSiteTV in the coming days for more from Eddie about what it’s been like to shoot the series!

KSITETV: For those who might not be caught up, what has Henry’s story arc been with his father this season?

EDDIE LIU: When we started Season 2, Henry was living his best life. He’s happily in love. He and Nicky are kicking ass and they just saved the world. And so, when Henry’s father tries to come back to his life and reaches out to him, Henry is really reluctant. There’s years of built up resentment and anger towards his father for for not being around. The weird irony is that even though he always thought of Daniel is like an sbsentee, terrible dad, they’re actually more like, and have a lot more in common than anyone could have thought.

In Wednesday night’s episode, he might be able to get some help from his dad, is that right?

Yeah. That’s right. Ironically, as his dad’s organization says, their mantra is “the mission comes first.” Henry, too. That’s how he operates. The mission comes first. And so, at this point in the game when everything’s at stake and there are no more other cards to play like, Henry is very much willing to keep up with his dad, because he knows that his father is the perfect person to turn to for help.

How do you think Henry’s life has changed from knowing Nicky?

I think before this, Henry was already living a happy, normal life, but the way he studies and uses this mystic lore, it’s as if a comic book nerd found out that that there are Avengers and that there are mutants out there, and people can be superpowered. I feel like Henry’s really living his best life now. This is exactly exactly what he’s trained for, and this is what he lives for. He’s super happy, getting to nerd out with his kick-ass superhuman girlfriend.

What do you think of the notion that they might have to go Zhilan for help?

The fact that they have to consider it and contemplate it really goes to show how dire the stakes are, and what they’re up against. Russell Tan is this enemy who kind of hides in plain sight. He’s a billionaire, and he has an infinitude of resources in money, and time, and people working under him.

The Scooby gang are a small but mighty unit, and they’re like The Little Engine That Could They’re small, but they’re scrappy, and that means a lot of improvising and making yourself keep your head open to all possibilities to overcome the bad guy.

Without spoiling anything, can you tease what Russell Tan is up to in Wednesday night’s episode?

I will say that it’s really fun getting to watch Russell Tan be evil, and then once we explain why, I think the fans are going to have a really fun time watching that unfold. If our show hasn’t been weird enough, it’s gonna get weirder, in a good way. We’ve definitely gone past the Harry Potter phase of the show. I think part of the reason there are fans of the show and why we love working on is that it’s a true fantasy, magical, adventure show, and our writers have crafted this ridiculously fun adventure where we feel like we’re still in the real world and also just indulging in the fun of all that is magical and mystical.

Kung Fu “Alliance” airs TONIGHT (June 8) at 9PM ET/PT on The CW! Come back to KSiteTV soon for more from Eddie Liu – a gallery of photos from “Alliance” can be found below.

Does anyone else notice the similarities between Russell Tan and a certain other billionaire who thinks he can get away with anything?
