Deadline is reporting that Jane the Virgin spinoff Jane the Novela has found its lead in East Los High alum Jacqueline Grace Lopez. She’ll be playing Estela, an up-and-coming art curator forced to deal with the ramifications of a huge family secret.
From Jane the Virgin writer Valentina Garza, Jane the Novela is described as a telenovela-inspired anthology where each season is a novel “written by” Jane lead Jane Villanueva, with Gina Rodriguez set to provide narration. The first season of Jane the Novela takes place at a vineyard in Napa Valley and follows Estela as she’s forced to live a double life.
In addition to her role on the Hulu drama, Rodriguez’s television credits include Light as a Feather, General Hospital, and Fan Wars.
Jane the Novela is part of a CW pilot slate that includes Riverdale spinoff Katy Keene; DC-verse spinoff Batwoman; new takes on The Lost Boys and Nancy Drew; and Glamorous, which features a gender non-conforming lead character.
