Episodes of Invincible Season 2 begin releasing this Friday, October 3, where Prime Video has really made a name for themselves with high-quality comic book adaptations. Unlike The Boys, of course, Invincible is animated which allows for even more spectacle and an attention to detail that makes it look like the comic books created by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley all brought to life.
As described in official Prime Video press materials, Invincible revolves around 18-year-old Mark Grayson, who’s just like every other guy his age—except his father is (or was) the most powerful superhero on the planet. Still reeling from Nolan’s betrayal in Season One, Mark struggles to rebuild his life as he faces a host of new threats, all while battling his greatest fear – that he might become his father without even knowing it.
This particular video focuses on the season’s first two episodes – “A Lesson For Your Next Life” and “In About Six Hours I Lose My Virginity To A Fish.” The series wastes no time into getting back into a big story, and the opening moments of the season premiere see a world that has become an even more dangerous place. Due to events happening in the real world, some of these things are a little bit hard to watch, but again, they fit the narrative as we see a character who is trying to get some help with a huge and possibly disastrous experiment. Mark/Invincible also has some decisions that he has to make with regards to his new situation and the other characters that surround him, including the Guardians of the Globe.
Episode #2.2 feels a bit more like a return to form, as we see more with Mark’s friends and more of how he and his mother are dealing with the loss of Nolan. This episode also has several characters that remind me of why I enjoy the world of Invincible in the first place — Robert Kirkman definitely grew up with comics and the same media that I did growing up, so if, say, the Supreme Lizard looks a heck of a lot like G.I. Joe’s Serpentor, I’m going to get a big grin on my face (though I was hoping for a “THIS I COMMAND!”) That also brings me to another part of Invincible that I really enjoy — there are so many guest voices that it is fun to try to identify who I’m listening to. (I love that the principal of Reginald VelJohnson High School looks and sounds just like “Carl Winslow,” for example.)
The first two episodes of Season 2 also introduce some new characters with very interesting backstories, again subverting what I expected from them.
The other thing that worked for Invincible in Season 1 that continues to work now is the quality of the animation and the choices made with the character dynamics. I love seeing how Mark flies, and when other characters use their abilities, they don’t always look like how we’re used to seeing them in other media. I like that.
If you’re an Invincible fan already, you’re definitely doing to enjoy these first two episodes. I can’t wait to see more.
