Would you believe we’re still not done sharing interviews from this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego?
Today, we share a press room interview with The Vampire Diaries’ Candice Accola. Candice’s character, Caroline, was part of a very popular pairing that the fans dubbed “Klaroline” last season — a pairing that came to an end when Klaus had to go and get his own spin-off, The Originals. In the season finale, Klaus left Caroline with a gift… he’s allowing Caroline’s former love, Tyler, to return to Mystic Falls with the promise that in the end, he (Klaus) and Caroline would be together again. So, of course, Klaus’ parting gift would be the first thing we’d ask of Ms. Accola as the roundtable discussion started.
“Why would Klaus let Tyler come back for Caroline? I think it’s the idea of, if you’ve ever been in a relationship, and if someone’s like ‘I don’t know. I don’t know if I want to be with you,’ you go ‘Okay. I’m going to go ahead and take a step back, then, and if you think you want to be with this other person, I’ll let you try that out, because I know that you’re probably going to come back to me. And if you don’t come back to me, then it wasn’t meant to be. So I think he’s just being older, wiser, and pretty darn smooth, if you ask me,” she answers.
Does Candice think that Caroline and Klaus should be the endgame for the two characters? “I don’t know what the writers believe. My personal opinion on it would be no. I don’t think Caroline thinks that she’d end up with Klaus. I think she likes the idea of it, but I don’t think it’s really registering in her brain as a logical partnership. I don’t think she’s looking at it in a romantic way,” she says. Ultimately, Candice jokes that she’s “tired of the ultimate bad boys.”
“We’re these really precious young girls!” she exclaims. “It’s true. I love the idea of it, and I love it in entertainment, but Klaus has a lot on his plate, and that’s what’s so funny, whenever fans of the series are like ‘but Caroline and Klaus!’ And I’m like ‘but he’s a murderer! He’s the bad one! And he’s got a baby on the way with someone else! Like, guys!’ And they’re like ‘but he’s cute’ and I’m like ‘that’s the problem!’ That’s the problem. Let’s watch Sex And The City a little bit, let’s read some Cosmos and get to the root of the problem. No. I just think the bad boy aspect is really sweet, but it doesn’t last forever. So if Caroline and Klaus are going to be a forever couple, then that’s going to have to chip away a little bit,” she says.
In non-shipping news, Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries, which premieres October 3 on The CW, picks up a few months later, so the first thing we see is getting caught up on the characters’ summers. Caroline is getting ready for college, and she’s ready to see Tyler, and she’s happy, but also scared. As to be expected with Caroline, she gets “very organized” to prepare for college. “It’s very fun, it’s very loose. What I love coming back into this season is it’s fun. It’s got a little brighter energy to it. I think because all of these characters don’t know how bad it is right now — they don’t know that Stefan is underwater, they don’t know that Bonnie is dead… they just think that everyone’s just doing their own thing. Everyone’s kind of on a high right now,” she teases.
