When The Vampire Diaries returns for Season 5 on October 3, Bonnie Bennett will be starting the new year in a different way from previous seasons – she’s a ghost, following the events of the episodes that concluded the show’s fourth season.
We spoke to the actress to plays Bonnie, Kat Graham, at this year’s Comic-Con, where she offered some insight into what it feels like for a ghost.
“Basically, the last season finale ended with the character I play, Bonnie Bennett, doing a spell that killed her,” Graham recaps. “The only person who can see her is Jeremy on the other side, and that’s basically where the new season takes off, where she can only communicate with Jeremy, and she is on the other side, so she is a ghost.”
This character change offers a different perspective for the character of Bonnie. “It deals with a character who really was so powerful for the latter half of the past couple seasons, to having that completely taken away from her, and how she’s going to deal with that. So, we’ll see,” Kat says.
Kat teases that the first episode back involves a lot of work for all of the cast, and it might involve getting bloody, and screaming, and crying. Do ghosts get bloody? “I got a little bloody last night,” Kat reveals. “It’s the same rules that applied [in previous seasons, with other characters from “the other side.”] They can still come into the human dimension, but only somebody like Jeremy who can see a character from the other side would be able to see someone like me,” she explains.
