David Fynn plays Brett on the comedy series Undateable, which sees its second season beginning Tuesday, March 17 on NBC.
In anticipation of the premiere, we spoke with Fynn about Brett and started with asking him how the Undateable experience has changed with him since the show started taping last year.
“For me, personally, I’m a lot more relaxed when it comes to improvving, and just kind of going off script, just because we did it so much last year… it took me a few weeks to kind of catch up with the guys. But now, I feel a bit more confident in doing that. But I think generally as a cast, I think everyone’s really settled in their characters, and I think that shows. Everyone’s just a bit more relaxed and comfortable,” he says.
That relaxed cast will change a little bit with season 2, as Bridgit Mendler has been added to the cast as a new character named Candace.
“Candace is really interesting, because when she arrives, it’s really nice to have a female character that’s not there as potential dating prospects for the guys,” Fynn says. “It’s really good to have her come in, and she’s just so different to any other characters that we’ve had. I know Justin is [too], but she’s so optimistic and bright-eyed and bushy tailed, and just full of energy, which is really nice, because I think our characters are all a little bit beaten up by the world; a little bit jaded and bitter, I suppose, and she’s just so optimistic and positive.”
We were able to attend a taping of Undateable recently, and the show has quite an interesting process. How much of the show is scripted and how much is done as improv? “The first take is always as written, and then we’ve got jokes as a cast that we’ve worked on ourselves in the week, so we’ll maybe do a bit of improv, and then the writers will come out and they’ll have alternate jokes, and quite often, we pitch with them or against them. We’ll pitch a joke to Bill or Adam, and they’ll go ‘oh, yeah, that’s better! We’ll do yours’ or ‘oh, no, ours is better. We’ll do ours’,” David confirms. “It’s interesting, because you get the opportunity to get bits that you’ve worked on in the show, and you definitely get an opportunity to pitch them. I think most scenes that end up on TV have got improv in them.”
Finally… as Undateable’s sole gay character at the moment, is Brett going to get a love interest this season? “He has moments,” Fynn teases. “I think he’s still struggling with being out, really, especially because he’s kind of a fish out of water as well. I think even if he was straight, he’s kind of shy, I think, when it comes to romance. I think that holds him back, also.”
Undateable Season 2 begins this Tuesday, March 17 on NBC. Come back soon for more interviews!
