Tumblr Bait: Dylan O’Brien Talks “Sterek” & Lydia In Teen Wolf Season 3

We’ve just returned from a Teen Wolf press room at this year’s WonderCon in Anaheim, California, with the Teen Wolf panel moderated by Jim Halterman coming later today. We’ll have some interviews (with video!) up this weekend, but for those hungry for some news from the show, here’s a treat… Dylan O’Brien (Stiles) talks about what interaction he will or won’t have with Derek (Tyler Hoechlin), the character fans often “ship” him with on places like Tumblr, as well as the interaction he will or won’t have with Lydia (Holland Roden).

More specifically, with the character Danny getting a love interest, might that appease the “slash shippers” who want some male-male action on the show?

“You know, they’re not Facebook official,” Dylan teases, before telling us what we can or can’t expect with “Sterek.”

“Yeah. It’s kind of like we’ve fulfilled everyone’s, like, void that apparently the show has [with Danny]. Derek and Stiles are on a little bit of a break. No, I don’t know. We’re not in that many scenes together, for some reason. Our characters still have that rapport, and just because it’s not touched on as much… everything’s so much bigger. Derek’s world grows, Stiles’ world grows, hence they don’t have [as much] time. Even me and Posey don’t have as many scenes as we did together. It’s kind of the case with everybody on the show,” he explains.

Stiles will, however, have a lot of scenes with Lydia.”I’d say, yeah. I’ve been with Holland the most. Not romantically. Stiles kind of shelves that. Obviously he still has feelings for Lydia. It’s not going to go away overnight, or ever. That’s still the underlying thing of the season, but more of the focus is them becoming a team,” he says.

Attention “Sterek” fans: You are NOT being bashed here! You have every right to want what you want from the characters, but PLEASE do not assign hate or presumed feelings from a writer you do not personally know. See comments section below for more.

Look for more from Dylan as well as Tyler Posey (Scott) and showrunner Jeff Davis here on KSiteTV in the coming days! Teen Wolf Season 3 begins June 3 on MTV. Come by our Teen Wolf forum to talk about the show!

Enough with the “gay payoff”, it’s insulting.

    2. Andres on Mar 30, 2013 4:57 pm

Dear writer of this article, repeat after me: “Slash shippers don’t want characters together just for the sex” … It’s a lot more than that, and the way you’re putting it is offensive

    3. Craig Byrne on Mar 30, 2013 5:04 pm

Andres: I am the writer of this article and I apologize if in any way the article could be taken as offensive. I presented the narrative as it was presented in the press room. I will be posting video so you can see for yourself how the question was presented and how it was answered.

Personally speaking, I think “Sterek” should happen on the series, and would be a natural progression for the characters, so the last thing I would want to imply is that there’s anything wrong with rooting for it… or else, heck, I would have never asked Jeff Davis about “Sterek” in our interview last year. (Search for it.) Even sooner, I myself asked Dylan O’Brien why Stiles is so concerned with what Danny thinks of him… so… it’s not something I would think of as “ew, gross” or belittle in any way.

      Hope this makes some sense.

    4. Jan on Mar 30, 2013 5:30 pm

Oh please enough of the Sterek. This ship is seriously dragging everything down and it doesn’t exist. I hope you asked Dylan some other questions.

    5. Tori on Mar 30, 2013 5:34 pm

Wow, thanks for the article dude. Don’t let the haters get you down, you presented what information you gained and I’m totally thankful for it ^^ And in a perfectly polite way~ So excited for the videos!

    6. Katy on Mar 30, 2013 5:36 pm

Craig Byrne: I believe Andres was saying that this article (and many, many others) make shipping sound like it’s about nothing but sex. If you feel the need to defend yourself on the internet, at least address the fact that you are assuming what fans on Tumblr want out of the show. Believe it or not, some of us care about things other than Sterek. While it would be nice to see Sterek happen, we also have the maturity to recognize that there are more than two characters on the show.

    7. yrom on Mar 30, 2013 5:38 pm

I was angry at first, but I now appreciate your explanation. I can see you didn’t mean to offend us. Thanks for asking Dylan.

    8. teeny on Mar 30, 2013 5:39 pm

Wow, wait – why are people attacking the guy who wrote this article? Jfc, he wasn’t the one who answered the question. As much as I love Dylan, he was the one who completely f*cked up. So disappointed right now. :(

    9. Craig Byrne on Mar 30, 2013 5:40 pm

Katy — that’s fair. THAT is an assumption that I wholly admit I jumped to conclusions on, mostly because when I did my interview with Jeff last year, the “Sterek” part was the only part that Tumblr seemed to pick up on. I’m sorry for that.

You’ll be reading a lot more about the rest of the characters on the site as soon as I can post something.

    10. James on Mar 30, 2013 5:42 pm

Why do reporters think that slash shippers just want gay sexy times. As a gay man I can enjoy shows with and without gay characters. The allure of Sterek for me is the chemistry and potential of the characters, not the hot and heavy aspect of their potential relationship. I am happy that Jeff is willing to include gay characters. But that doesn’t “appease me”. Shipping is enjoying the possible connection between two characters. If we were Stiles-Lydia shippers would you tell us that we would be appeased by Scott and Alison hooking up ? That makes no sense and that is why people are so insulted. Fandoms and shippers are a bit bonkers and maybe you think we are being irrational but from our perspective you are belittling us and what we stand for. For example the Sterek campaign raised money for a wolf conservation and sent the cast cookies. This was to show our support of the show in general and the Sterek ship. It was not done to get the actors to sow a bit of skin in season 3. Do a bit of research beyond reading about what the other careless reporters are calling us.

    11. Theo on Mar 30, 2013 5:44 pm

Even though I am a huge Sterek shipper, I am well aware that this will NEVER happen more because of a societal thing than a show thing. Sterek is a fantasy that won’t become a reality in canon. Just need to enjoy the show as is, and leave the Sterek to our wonderful fanfics

    12. Limenitis on Mar 30, 2013 6:06 pm

re: might that appease the “slash shippers” who want some male-male action on the show?
I appreciate your attempts to clarify your intent. But that doesn’t change the fact that your phrasing absolutely implies that slash shippers just care about seeing m/m sex, (when it’s been clarified again and again that it is about a relationship between two characters with amazing chemistry and the potential to be great partners.)
If this is a close paraphrase, then attribute the question to someone else. Otherwise, please accept responsibility for what you’ve written and don’t blame “the room.”

    13. yrom on Mar 30, 2013 6:07 pm

Theo, please let’s still have some hope for canon. There’s been this huge vibe of resentfulness and disappointment in the fandom lately and that is the reason why we’re so easily hurt. We feel misunderstood but also beaten because the spoilers only suggest the opposite of the at least ’emotional closeness’ we were hoping to see Derek and Stiles grow towards, but remember that Teen Wolf is set in a world with no homophobia, in a society from which ours can only learn from.

Danny/Ethan (or Aiden? can’t remember which one of the twins it is) are gonna be a couple and as Dylan suggested the one that will fill the void that other characters will be experiencing. It’s not the couple that unites us and inspires us to create – because yes, it’s not interchangeable, we’re not satisfied just because ‘hey, it’s still two guys’ – but I still have hope that great things can happen in such a setting. Let’s try to be stay positive!

And by the way, I’m interested in what will happen to the other characters too.

    14. S on Mar 30, 2013 6:14 pm

I don’t get/see how “Sterek” would be a “natural progression” of their characters? They haven’t shown anything like that between them on the show. Yes, the actors have good chemistry on screen, and they play well off each other in their humorous scenes (I’m a huge fan of them both and their relationship) but it doesn’t scream…they find each other attractive and want to have sex with each other, or that they’re even attracted to males. I think your reading too much into the jokes of the show. Jeff is allowed to make them without having some hidden meaning.

    15. Lea on Mar 30, 2013 6:49 pm

I still hold hope that Sterek will happen on the show. I love the show but Sterek is what made me start watching and Stiles’ and Derek’s scenes on the show are my favorites! I believe that with proper time and develoment the characters of Stiles and Derek could become an amazing real couple! I’ll wait till season 5 if I have to because that’s what’s great about love stories on television shows.. they take time

    16. RafaelYorke on Mar 30, 2013 9:17 pm

I’m angry, i don’t want to see two guys have sex. I want to see the story of stiles and derek

    17. Craig Byrne on Mar 30, 2013 9:29 pm

I dunno, I think there have been hints of Stiles at least being bendy since the pilot episode. Yes, he has had a visible thing for Lydia, but I’d find it in character and not a lightswitch if “Sterek” happened.

    18. Memé on Mar 31, 2013 1:28 am

      This is incredibly offensive.

    19. Anna on Mar 31, 2013 2:42 am

I’m more offended by the message being sent in general. Sterek shippers won’t be ‘appeased’ by Danny’s “Slash Shipper” story line, because he isn’t the object of what we ship. I’m sure there are some big Danny fans out there, but Danny has nothing to do with Sterek aka Stiles & Derek and our wanting them together. And no, not just for the “Slash Shipping.” Someone already said this, but we want to see a relationship develop between them, and believe that it could be very natural and organically entertaining and wonderful to and in the show. I love Dylan as well, but he definitely could have found a better way to state what he wanted, and this article definitely didn’t need to take on the same life his comments did. Just incredibly disappointed in general right now, because it seems that they really do believe it is all a joke and that the only reason Sterek is shipped is plainly for sex and that by throwing just any gay (canon or not) character’s together and having them go at it, that that should be enough to satisfy our love for our ship. FYI; it doesn’t. It won’t ever. Gold star for not trying.

    20. Anna on Mar 31, 2013 2:46 am

^^ Not the same Ana as the first commenter. Just clarifying.

    21. kowaiyoukai on Apr 3, 2013 8:23 pm

I think the idea presented here is offensive because it is accidentally homophobic. Think of it this way. If a ton of fans said, “We want Scott and Allison to stay together forever!” and somebody replied, “Well, Lydia’s getting a new boyfriend this season, so that should appease the het shippers.” … Let’s just say the idea is ridiculous. People and characters are not interchangeable. Lydia getting a boyfriend does not fill the desire to have a random heterosexual couple, nor would it negate Scott/Allison as a fan favorite pairing — just like Danny getting a boyfriend does not fill a desire to have a random homosexual couple, nor does it negate Stiles/Derek as a fan favorite pairing.

To put it simply, one character’s relationship has no bearing on another’s. Comparing them is the whole apples to oranges routine. I know no offense was intended by anyone, but I can’t help thinking this idea of Danny/somebody overriding Stiles/Derek would never have been mentioned if the couples involved were heterosexual.

    22. 21149315 on Aug 11, 2013 4:13 pm

White fangirls will always be hypocrites of the highest degree. They show zero support for actual gay characters, zero for female characters, zero for parent or non-white characters. They are so fixated on two white hetero males being together and get angry when it doesn’t go their way. It doesn’t help that he writer/director of the show completely neglects supporting characters to a point that they are killed off without much effort.

    23. Anon Shipper on Aug 29, 2013 12:34 am

      @21149315

I’m sorry, but the first part of that comment came off as racist. It’s not just white fangirls who ship, and they don’t just ship any two white hetero men. Usually when shopping happens, it’s because there is amazing chemistry between two characters/actors.

Do you know how big the ship for Santana/Brittney from Glee is? As well as Klaine and Quinn/Rachael? Do you know how many people supported Willow and Tara on Buffy? Troy/Abed from Community?

People ship Sterek for more than “TWO WHITE HETERO GUYS OMG!!!” And I ship them too, and I am not a white fangirl. I would love for Davis to make it canon, but if he doesn’t then I won’t be angry over it.

Pleas stop generalizing and misrepresenting our reasons for shipping.

    24. Neutral on Apr 9, 2014 10:12 am

hum i think the “sterek” idea could press to the writer of teen wolf to make then Stiles and derek have a less interaction in the serie… i think that will be really unprofesional, the fandoom is everywhere with anything, is a big part of his fame, just live with that and continue the serie without problem, with “sterek” o without “sterek”, without do something in counter. Just let the story be… so leave the fandoom “sterek” scream happy and joke sometimes with the actors, what change that? nothing u.u
