The Vampire Diaries: Julie Plec Talks About Fan Favorite Elijah

This afternoon, The CW hosted an advance screening of Thursday night’s Vampire Diaries, the appropriately-titled “The Last Day,” and afterward there was a Q&A with Executive Producer Julie Plec, Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy), Kat Graham (Bonnie), Michael Trevino (Tyler), Daniel Gillies (Elijah), and Joseph Morgan (Klaus).

We’ll have some words to say about “The Last Day” in a bit and will also have a lot more to share (which you’ll probably also read reports of on many other great websites), but by request, we’re just going to jump in first with some talk about a new character who has quickly become a fan favorite – Daniel Gillies’ Elijah.

“Daniel is so amazing,” Plec says, making Gllies blush. “We all have the sickest crush on Daniel Gillies. The actor crush, the love crush, fan crush, all of this. I think I said to somebody that Elijah’s character was meant to bridge the gap between the introduction of Klaus in script, and then the actual reveal of Klaus late in the season, and he was meant to get us from Point A to Point B. We didn’t have the true mythology of how to kill an original completely worked out when we first introduced Elijah. And then freakin’ Dan Gillies walks in that door, in the big old haunted house thing, and that suit, and he has that accent, and everything about him is so great, we’re like ‘Well. We can’t make him easy to kill, because we don’t want our characters to look stupid for not being able to get rid of him,’ so we just made it harder and harder until he reached the point that ‘screw it. Originals are immortal.’ And it’s honestly because of Daniel and the work that he did.”

Plec mentions that Season 3 will be “The Year of the Originals,” but she does not know yet – or is at least not saying – if Klaus or Elijah will be on for a full time basis next year. “That is a decision that gets made when we actually break story for Season Three,” she says.

Come back to KSiteTV for more Vampire Diaries coverage in the coming days. If there’s something specific you’d like to see, leave comments! You can find a gallery of images from this week’s episode, “The Last Day,” here.

Awesome! Thank God Daniel Gillies is on this awesome show. He has added so much greatness as Elijah. I couldn’t imagine anyone else portraying Elijah as perfectly as he does. It would have been a real shame if his awesome talent was wasted when he first appeared on TVD, but of course, Kevin & Julie wouldn’t let that happen. When photo stills of the “Rose” episode came out, I honestly became a fan of Elijah right there & then. It’s as if I knew this guy was gonna be something special; and boy did that turn out to be true.

Love Elijah!! It wasn’t love at first sight for me…but as soon as I saw the coin toss…he had my attention. Elijah is now my favorite character on TVD!

    3. Kas on Apr 27, 2011 6:11 pm

I really hope Elijah stays. I’m not sold on Klaus at all. If its one or the other that gets stay Elijah gets my vote. He fits in so well.

My hope is that he is a main character for season 3 and that him and Katherine kinda have some romance, i know some people hate her but shes jst misunderstood and theyd be a perfect new couple :P

I love Elijah, and I think that anybody could play that role so good like Daniel Gillies, he brings so much elegance, style and sexiness to TVD!! I hope he stays in the show, it’s a really good character ♥!

    6. Lauren on Apr 27, 2011 9:18 pm

Damn it, I hope Elijah stays. DON’T KILL HIM OFF!! I don’t care about Klaus, but for the love of God, don’t kill Elijah!!! He’s my second favorite Vampire Diaries dude–besides Damon.

    7. lea ann on Apr 27, 2011 9:21 pm

Forget Damon. Elijah is way way way hotter. He’s a gentleman, sexy sexy sexy and only he know’s how to where a suit. Love how he just casually rips the heart out of someone wituhout even blinking an eye. Please have our Elijah around for Season 3.

    8. Becca on Apr 27, 2011 10:02 pm

Joseph Morgan had my heart before he ever appeared (he had me at “sweetheart”) but Elijah (Daniel) seriously won me over in the last episode Klaus. I could have sat & watched him to talk to Elena about the past all day. Viva Las Originals!

    9. Lynn on Apr 28, 2011 7:06 am

Yes! This makes me SOOOOO happy to know that Elijah will be on Season 3!!! I’ve been so afraid he was going to be killed off in these last few episodes. I absolutely love the way Daniel Gillies portrays the powerful, calm, sexy, classy and confident ancient vamp with a sense of honor. Did anyone else notice how, in the last episode, he picked up Elena’s jacket and handed it to her as they were leaving the Lockwood Mansion? So perfect for the gentleman he is. Daniel took this role and knocked it out of the park. #TeamElijah forever! Be sure to follow him on twitter: @mrholymonster . He is an epic tweeter – absolutely hilarious!

My love for Elijah’s character wasn’t instant, it was gradual but he won me over and I didn’t even notice it. He just has so much elegance, style, and charm and love his humor. But OMG, in that last episode ‘Klaus,’ I completely fell in love with his character. He is amazing. I don’t care about Klaus. Elijah is my favorite original. I hope they make him an official character for season 3. I was so caught up in his convo with Elena, I was just hoping the episode went on longer – I can hear him talk all day long, lol. Oh and might I add, that Daniel Gillies carries a suit like nobody’s business. After Stefan, Elijah is my second favorite character.

    11. Raghu on Apr 28, 2011 3:08 pm

Elijah (Daniel Gillies) should become a series regular for season 3 of the vampire diaries. His performance is really amazing. You see that his character development is improving in the episodes he appears. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) should also become a series regular in season 3 of the vampire diaries. I saw Klaus episode 4 times and Elijah’s performance in that episode was the best ever. The way he tells about his back-story and of what relation Klaus is to him was pretty much the turning point. The origin of the originals was best origin story ever told. The chemistry between Elijah and Elena was the best. I loved the fact that how each had the information that the other needed and also the fact that Elijah was in love with Katherine was a huge shocker.

I love Elijah, he is amazing, and as Elena said in the Klaus episode he is a noble man, so I hope that he will become a regular in TVD. It would be a shame if he was killed. Daniel Gillies is an awesome actor.

    13. Dilara on May 1, 2011 4:25 pm

Daniel Gillies is doing a fantastic job as Elijah! The producers chose a wonderful actor to do the job! He already has a huge fanbase! It would be awesome if he became a series regular! Let’s hope he stays! :)..

    14. Natalie on May 9, 2011 1:51 pm

OMG I freakin love Elijah. I wasn’t overstruck on him when we first saw him in ‘Rose’ but since then ive fell in love with him more and more and by ‘Klaus’ im now in love. So looking forward to Season 3 aslong as he is in it…..and i want more Elena/Katherine/Elijah action they have such great chemistry …eeeeehhhhhh love him here we come season 3

    15. LL-A on Oct 9, 2011 7:36 am

I absolutly LOVE Elijah *fangirl crush-time*
Please make him reappear! Or make another mini-serie just about the Originals :)
