Tonight on The Originals, we learned that Elijah is partly responsible for the monster Klaus has become… and that revelation will have ramifications on the rest of the season and possibly the series.
At a recent group Q&A hosted by The CW, we spoke with Executive Producer Michael Narducci about the Elijah and Klaus brotherly relationship and how it might be affected now that this information is out.
“One of the things that our show is absolutely about is the nature of this relationship,” Narducci said, referring to Klaus and Elijah. “Elijah, who can’t seem to abandon his monstrous brother, and Klaus, who couldn’t live without him but is constantly doing terrible things to his brother, sometimes out of love, sometimes out of his own diabolical, paranoid, psychological delusion. And now, interestingly enough, we’ve found out that there is a great sin from Elijah’s past where maybe Elijah has stood by Klaus’ side for all these centuries because of a sense of guilt over something he did, and now we’re realizing that maybe the noble, beautiful, honorable Elijah has some flaws or chinks in his armour and it’s a little bit more complicated. Maybe there’s an understandable reason why these two people are the yin and yang for each other,” he continued.
With all of that happening, the two brothers do ackowledge that their relationship is fraught with conflict and drama and pain, but they are still blood. “They’re the only people that each of them has known for a thousand years and been consistently beside – Kol and Finn are dead, and Rebekah’s been gone for quite some time, and Freya’s awesome, doesn’t really know them the way they know each other,” Narducci explained. “Given everything that’s going on, despite their conflicts and how much they currently loathe each other to the point of what you saw at the end of this episode, they kind of need to stand together, because what’s coming at them is far worse than each of them are to one another,” he warned.
As far as Klaus’ other relationships go, Narducci was asked how Klaus will react to Cami’s arrest at the end of tonight’s episode. “Eventually, and inevitably, he will be concerned very much for what has happened to Cami. As far as he knows right now, she is with her pal Vincent investigating a crime, and he’s dealing with much larger issues, not the least of which is ‘what’s going on with the return of my ex from a thousand years ago?’And then, very rapidly, other people in Klaus’s life who he loves very much and cares for and who he’s sworn a vow of ‘always and forever’ to protect, are going to also be, in a large degree of jeopardy. So, he might be too busy with other things to realize what’s going on with Cami, and maybe even until it’s too late. So, that’s kind of where he’s gonna be headed with regard to his concern for her,” Narducci explained.
Cami might also soon find that the cop who arrested her will end up in a similar predicament. “Very, very soon, both he and Cami might find themselves together in some difficult terrain,” he teased.
