At the end of last week’s episode of The Originals, Klaus Mikaelson learned of a “great betrayal” by his brother Elijah, where Elijah compelled the dissolution of a relationship between Klaus and his “true love” Aurora… and while on The Originals set earlier this week as part of a press trip, we spoke with actor Daniel Gillies (Elijah) about what that betrayal will actually mean for the brothers.
“That one was a bit of a bone of contention, actually, because I didn’t really understand,” Gillies admits. “I was like ‘wait. Wasn’t Tatiana his love of his life, and isn’t it this’… I kind of had the same reaction as Elijah did in the show, which is funny, because there’s all this blame… ‘what are you talking about? So now THIS is the reason that you descended into [evil]… if I left the refrigerator door open this morning, would this be the reason for a thousand years of that? What are you going to tell me now, that I did? I don’t know what I can do that’s right by you’,” he says.
And, it seems Klaus does have a short fuse. “Klaus seems pretty ready to be angry at Elijah/the world. It was unsurprising that he was blaming me for stuff, but yes, it seemed strange that the writing seemed to really be pushing us in the direction that Aurora was this great love. I’m still not certain that they are,” Gillies speculates.
Finally, Elijah did try to warn Klaus, one journalist pointed out. “It’s true. I remember ‘hey! There’s this thing!’ It almost felt like a sitcom device, at the beginning of a Friends or something…. ‘I have really gotta tell you this thing.’ So, Elijah was channeling David Schwimmer,” Gillies jokes.
