Although it feels like the first year just ended, Season 2 of The L.A. Complex sees its premiere tonight at 9PM on The CW. Unfortunately, the U.S. ratings weren’t the greatest for Season 1; now, hopefully with being on in the summer coupled with the fact that these episodes haven’t already aired overseas, it will do much better. It’s a fantastic show. As a bonus, if you missed Season 1, or missed parts of Season 1, you can jump right in and still be able to follow the action.
We spoke with several members of the cast on location here in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, and they offered some hints of what we have to look forward to. First, we spoke with Jonathan Patrick Moore (Connor), who offered some hints about his character’s Season 2 romance:
“He has an interesting relationship with this woman, Jennifer Bell, and he’s also trying a relationship with Raquel, so he’s trying to work out how to navigate the situation,” Moore says, describing a situation that, at least before you see the episodes, might make Connor look to be a bit of a jerk. How will Raquel, who just found out she is pregnant, react? “You know, probably not well. At least, Connor doesn’t think so,” Jonathan teases. “He is kind of offended by the idea in the beginning, because he’s trying to give it a shot with Raquel, and have a real relationship with her, so that’s a really difficult thing to maneuver.”
And in addition to this relationship, about that pregnancy… is Connor the father? “There is definitely a chance that Connor could be the father,” he says, but he says that is not the reason for his relationship with Raquel. “He’s trying in the relationship before he knows about that,” Moore points out.
With all of these romantic possibilities, are things done for Connor and Abby? “Abby is going to be a little bit on the outside for Connor,” Moore explains. “They’re going to still try and connect, and they do a little bit, but it got a little bit messy between the two of them, and he kind of really fell apart. I don’t think that’s what she needed or wanted, and she finds something in Nick.”
Another character who will be facing romantic difficulty is Kaldrick King, played by Andra Fuller. We spoke with him about the violent ending to Season 1, where Kal struck Tariq when they were almost caught in a kiss. While not forgiving Kal’s actions and being aware that people were likely “appalled and pissed” with what he had done, he explained what was probably going through Kaldrick’s mind.
“Kal sees himself – besides his secret sexuality, Kal has always seen himself as a business. People make money off of his image. So with that said, I have to protect that image by all costs. So what you saw at the end of Episode 6 is Kaldrick going to extreme measures to protect that image,” he explains. (Note that these episodes were shot before recent weeks, when R&B singer Frank Ocean came out of the closet)
With this having happened, what’s next for Kaldrick? “You’re going to see Kal trying to figure out himself. A lot of self-reflection, a lot of disappointment within himself. A lot of darkness. He’s going to go into a very dark spiral,” Fuller says. What he does know for sure is that Kal “absolutely” cares about Tariq. “He cares about Tariq but he can’t show Tariq how much he really cares about him, because it will mean career suicide. In Tariq’s eyes, the question remains: If you care so much about me, then why don’t you just out yourself? Why don’t you just live freely? Kaldrick would never do that, because he wouldn’t have a brand. He wouldn’t have a career. His career would be done. So, it’s a conflict because he does care a lot about Tariq, but unfortunately, he cares more about his career and his life.”
