On the original 1978-1991 Dallas television series, both Larry Hagman’s J.R. Ewing and Patrick Duffy’s Bobby Ewing fathered additional children that we haven’t yet seen on TNT’s revival, which returns for a third season in early 2014. In J.R.’s case, the mother of his second child, Cally (Cathy Podewell), was seen in last year’s “J.R.’s Masterpiece” funeral episode, but not mention was made of the child she had, who would be in his early 20’s at this time. For Bobby, the son he fathered with Jenna Wade (Priscilla Presley) was later adopted by his half-brother, Ray, who has also made appearances on the show; but again, the child, Lucas, hasn’t been spoken of. Lucas would be 25.
This isn’t even including “James Beaumont,” an illegitimate son of J.R.’s that appeared in the later, more forgettable years of the original Dallas.
At a special event celebrating TNT’s 25th anniversary, we spoke with new Dallas showrunner, writer and developer Cynthia Cidre about the notion that there might be some other kids running around in that world.
“We do think about that all the time. We really do,” Cidre confirms. “We have it up on the wall. Every character who is still alive from the original incarnation of the show, and all of their offspring.” However, don’t celebrate and assume “Lucas Krebbs” is on the agenda just yet: Cidre tells us that the show’s thirteen series regulars are the top of the priority list, and those characters are what Cidre is working on developing right now.
“I’m still working on our season, which involves our regulars, and I’ve been at it for eight days, and it’s a gigantic mess of exploding ideas and characters, and who does what to whom, and how do we make it delicious, which is our ultimate question,” she says.
