The 100: Jason Rothenberg Talks About Tonight’s Season 2 Climax

If ever there was a series to recommend to a friend looking to try something new, it would be The 100, a CW drama that goes places you would never expect a show on The CW to go to. The show is dark, dramatic, exciting, and for two seasons now, has created storylines that have kept the show’s audience coming back every week.

The Season 2 premiere of The 100 airs tonight (March 11) at 9PM ET/PT, and to promote it, we spoke with the show’s Executive Producer, Jason Rothenberg, about the challengers the characters will face as the “Sky People” fight against Mount Weather while other characters seek a “City of Light.”

Enjoy, and don’t miss the season finale tonight!

KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: What challenges are the characters going to face in the finale?

HU216A_0199bJASON ROTHENBERG: I think the ultimate challenge is, of course, at the end of Episode 15 in Part 1, all of the advantages that Clarke had, going in, are taken away from her. Lexa and her thousand-person army are gone, and she’s left alone, outside that door with no way of getting inside the mountain and saving her people. Bellamy? Same thing. He’s inside the mountain, all of his people have been taken. All of the inside army in those cages are gone. Totally screwed. Octavia, also left facing the door, inside the tunnels… lost her standing in the Grounder world, and everything she’s worked so hard for… they’re all isolated and alone, so now it falls on our heroes to try and figure out another way to get it done.

Of course, in Part One, they were going about it like the good guys fight wars. We hope that the way our country fights wars is to say “listen, we don’t want to do this, but if we have to, we’re going to minimize civilian casualties. We’re only going to kill the people that want to kill us, and we’re going to try and save the civilians.” That’s what they’ve bent over backwards to do in Episode 15; the question, of course, is can they still do that and get what they want? Can they still do that and save their people?

HU205b_0291bAsking I know the fans of The 100 want to know: Amidst all of the drama, will there be any kissing?

[Laughs] There is a lip-touch-something moment in the episode. Clarke lip-touches-something.

    Will there be death?

There will be, yes. The body count is high. Ultimately, to get the job done, there will have to be death.

HU216A_0008bIs there any chance that Cage will get what’s coming to him?

Of course there is! This is a show where, ultimately, I think people get what’s coming to them, eventually. I don’t know whether it happens in this season, or in Season 8, but I believe in karma.

With the Walking Dead spin-off getting picked up, Alycia Debnam-Carey is going to be really busy soon. Is there still hope we might see Lexa on the show again in the future?

    She’s still alive, right?

HU215B_0365bI’m very excited for Alycia. She is amazing. She deserves it; I hope that that is a huge, huge hit for her, and for them. I’m a huge fan of The Walking Dead, and from what I know about what that spinoff is, it’s going to be very cool. It’s only [so many] episodes [per season], and as producers, we – at least my philosophy is that I don’t want to get in the way of my cast working, and doing things that are good for them. I’m hoping AMC sees it that way too. I love the character [of Lexa] and certainly want to continue that character’s journey.

Speaking of journeys, can you talk about the journey of Jaha and Murphy towards the City of Light?

It’s the culmination of that journey that’s been ongoing since Episode 10 when they left together. Of course, they face another obstacle or two before reaching the end of the line.

That’s not all for this interview! Because it was long, we’ve split it into two pages. Navigate for more below:

Lip-touch-something? I see. As it seems Clarke can only kiss Lexa properly…

Aw, I was hoping Lexa would be made into a regular. I don’t really keep up with a lot of TV so I didn’t know she was cast in TWD spin-off, which is a great thing for her!
…But I really, truly loved the grounders and Lexa this season, especially her dynamic with Clarke – what a compelling look into the complexities of leadership via two polar opposite perspectives, yet still magnetically kindred. I feel like there’s just so much more they could do with Lexa as a character and also with her relationship with Clarke/other sky people. I mean, we were just finally beginning to see her platinum steel emotional armour crack thanks to Clarke!
But alas, I look forward to the finale! Season 2 really has impressed me and put this show on a whole new level.

I hope that ‘something’ is Bellamy’s lips!
