There was a Bellamy-Raven hookup recently. Where did that come from, and how might that change how they relate going forward?
[Laughs] We all fondly refer to that scene as the “hate-effing scene,” or me and Bob [Morley] would call it “the saddest sex scene ever.” Literally, that came out of left field for me as an actress, and being like “What?” when I read the script. I was like “hey you guys, are you all insane? This is totally random! I don’t even find it to be very Raven-eque.” It really threw me for a loop. And the more I thought about it, and I talked to the writers and everything about it, the more I was like “well, actually, no. This does make a lot of sense.” This is the first time you see Raven without Finn this entire season, and this is the first time in her life that she is Finn-less, so she’s thinking he’s already moved on to Clarke immediately, and that just breaks her heart all over again. And so, she’s just trying to find any way to stop the pain and the ache. I think we’ve all been there before, where we’re like “oh! I just will distract myself with another person, or I’ll just try to find love this other way, and hopefully it’ll numb the pain.” If anything, it makes it worse.
That scene was Raven discovering that. She’s never been with anyone else besides Finn, so this is her second time, and this is the first time she’s ever had sex without love, and she’s realizing how empty and awful it is, and what a big mistake it was. I think it was just an evolution for Raven, kind of going up and figuring out herself, now that she is kind of alone, but also finding out that she’s not as alone as she thinks she is. She has the 100, and she has friends like Jasper and Monty, and even Bellamy, who they like her as a person, and they need her. So she’s discovering all that?
Beyond Finn and maybe Clarke’s mother, was there anyone else that Raven interacted with on the Arc, and do you think we’ll ever see more of that backstory?
I definitely think – if things go my way – if I get to be a part of Season 2 – that’s a big if – I think I that would be cool. The writers told me they were thinking of doing kind of what they did for Bellamy and Octavia, to have a backstory for Raven, but they have so much story to tell, they didn’t have any time [during Season 1]. So, I think if she gets to be part of Season 2, then there is a big possibility you’ll see exactly what happened between her and Finn, and her upbringing, too, and it’ll answer a lot of questions about her, and who she is, and why she makes her decisions.
What are you allowed to tease about the season finale?
It’s bonkers. It’s going to be insane. Your brain will blow up from it. You’re literally going to be watching it and then questioning “am I watching a movie?” because it’s so cinematic and epic. I was like “am I watching Lord of the Rings right now? This is INSANE!” Also, I think every character in it has an amazing realization, a turn, and even in the last episode, it began where every character in one way or another is on their own journey of self-survival as well as self-sacrifice. It’s almost like survival through sacrifice. So, think about that.
Was there an aspect of doing a sci-fi series like The 100 that really surprised you?
I’m like “this is insane! Why didn’t I do this before? This is great!” I think it’s so fun, and so much adventure, and I love it. It’s totally turned me.
Is there anyone who might be reading who hasn’t seen the series yet, what advice would you give them?
One – Don’t talk to me until you binge-watch. [laughs] Two – If you missed out, watch the whole thing. Don’t give up. Stay in it. I think the beginning of the season started out with a very different tone, and by the end of it, we’re like a whole different show. So, if you have good taste, persevere, and you’ll be pleasantly satisfied.
Do you have any last things you’d like to say to your fans who might be reading?
Thank you for reading. Watch The 100!
