Continuing our very long list of interviews from this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, here’s a video of John Constantine himself, Matt Ryan, talking about playing the legendary DC Comics character.
Constantine premieres Friday, October 24 on NBC.
So how does this all start? “We’re starting off kind of where the comics start off,” Ryan says. “We’ve got a whole canon of stuff to explore if the guys decide to explore it. So yeah. He’s pretty much where he is where the comics start off – the whole thing in Newcastle with the asylum, and then he’s committed, then he came out, then he committed himself, and then we kind of pick up there. We want to have him in a place where he’s still got a long way to go, and a long way to grow, as well,” he teases.
As has already been announced, Constantine has a new leading lady coming, in the form of Angelica Celaya as Zed. “It’s interesting, man. She’s going to be someone who doesn’t take any of his sh!t; someone who doesn’t fall for his manipulation. He’s headstrong, but someone who needs training, as well, from John. So I think it kind of sparks for a really good dynamic between the two; that they could kind of go toe to toe. There’s also that kind of chemistry between them as well,” Ryan says.
In the interview, which you can see above, Matt Ryan also talks about Constantine’s accent, his drink of choice, and the interactions that John has with the angel Manny (Harold Perrineau).
