SDCC Interview: Maggie Q On Nikita Season 3

Nikita Season 3 is still a few months away – premiering October 19, 2012 on The CW – but that didn’t stop members of the cast and producer Craig Silverstein from making an appearance at this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego.

We still have some interviews left to share from the SDCC appearance, so today we’re going to share what Maggie Q had to say about the upcoming third season. Enjoy, and beware of spoilers! You can read what Shane West had to say to us here.

“Every season’s been so different from each other, and Season 3 is no exception,” Maggie says about Season 3 going in. “The tables turned completely. What’s interesting about Nikita’s journey in this one is that she’s definitely allowed more privilege than she’s ever had. She’s not looking over her shoulder anymore. She’s able to have a dinner, or go for a walk, go in a coffee shop… and that’s never happened for her. But on the flip side to that, she’s got a boss now, which she’s never had. She works for the government again, which is ew. Who wants that?”

Installing Nikita back into the Division offices could be interesting, but will there be a psychological effect, as the time in Division was not so pleasant? “There’s actually a line in the first script where she walks in and she looks at Michael and she goes, ‘yeah. I’m still not used to coming back here at all.’ It’s going to be weird” Maggie laughs, before assuring that there will be some changes. “We redesigned Division, which is nice. They’ve done some reno. The government dropped some dough for some reno. But essentially, the bones of it are the same, but they’ve made it a little more people-friendly. It’s less ‘I’m Percy, I’m in this glass box, and I look at people running on treadmills, that I’m training, to kill people.’ It’s not that. You’re not going to see recruits training anymore. Obviously, they’re not doing that anymore. It’s going to be a more integrated environment, which is cool.” This new “job” will also mean a partnership between Nikita and Ryan, and that, too, will be different from things we’ve seen before. “Going in, Nikita and Ryan’s partnership is one of the things where we’re not running an assassin agency here. We’re trying to take down rogue agents who have gone offline, and who are a threat. It almost becomes a really cool looking field office, really. They’re investigating. They’re still going on missions, but it’s a different dynamic,” Maggie says. These rogue agents have been informally referred to as the “Dirty Thirty” by the Nikita team.

Maggie also updated us on the current state of “Mikita.” “We’re going to start out pretty strong. They’re in a good place,” she teases. “Something’s going to happen in the first episode… no one’s pregnant, it’s fine… but I think slowly into the season, not too far in, there’s going to be some obstacles. They’re not going to be obstacles that either of them have created,” she hints, before talking about some of the different obstacles we’re going to see. “Nikita’s got a villain in this season that’s unlike any villain that we’ve had. Percy had an agenda, and Percy’s agenda was always his number one priority. Nikita was something that got in the way. It was like ‘Nikita gets in the way, I take her out. That’s it.’ There was no personal ‘I hate Nikita and she is my target, and I want her dead.’ It was ‘get in my way, you’re dead. Other than that, I don’t care. In fact, if you disappeared and I never saw you again, even better.’ With Amanda, this is pure hatred. Amanda doesn’t have any other cause. Amanda wants to hurt Nikita, and hurting Nikita, as everybody knows, means hurting people around her. That’s not good for Nikita, and I don’t think she realizes what’s coming,” she says.

As far as allies go, Maggie says that every character adds something special to the team. “All of these guys have a different skill set, but they’re also so different as people, which I love,” she says. “Michael is a very righteous, dignified human being who is in authoritative position, which is great. We need Michael in that aspect. And then you’ve got Owen, who was a rogue cleaner, and somebody who brings in a much more hardcore action edge to what we’re doing. He’s somebody that they need, really, to find the Dirty Thirty. Then you’ve got Ryan, who is the level-headed, more administrative, more ‘listen, guys. We’re going to do this right. We’ve got to save our reputations. Let’s wrap this up.’ Which I love about him, which is slightly and tonally idealistic in the same sense. We’re going to see Ryan grow, also, this season. We’re going to see him get a lot tougher, actually, because Nikita’s going to challenge him in a way that he is not going to like and she’s not going to like. There’s going to be a little bit of friendship building, but also business that goes down. And then you’ve got Sean, who is a lovely addition, being Alex’s love interest, number one, and then also, he’s a good guy. Sean Pierce is a good guy. And I think he wants good things. I hope that he sways Alex to want good things, because I think Alex wants to stay in the middle of the fight, but I think that Sean may sway her to want something else. Who knows.”

The second season of Nikita hits DVD and Blu-ray on October 2, 2012! Order yours from Amazon.com and support this site! Stay tuned to KSiteTV in the coming days for more Nikita interviews from Comic-Con.
