SDCC Interview: Ian Somerhalder On Vampire Diaries Season 4 Developments

Comic-Con was a few weeks back, but we’ve still got some interviews left to share — and today, we share what Ian Somerhalder had to say in the Vampire Diaries press room, as he was surrounded by so many reporters and recorders that he had to take pictures of the action for himself. In the discussion, he talks about Season 4, specifically Elena’s changes and what they mean for Damon. He also talks about how Damon will react to things happening with certain other folks in town. But first, let’s see what he has to say about Elena’s new transformation into a vampire.

“Listen. Elena, we know her to be this phenomenally solid human being; an amazing individual, this beacon of light, this shepherd through the valley of darkness,” Ian points out, “but, Damon and Stefan have these tendencies to be highly volatile, very unpredictable at times when they’re on a bender and they’re crazy… who’s to say that when she turns into this vampire and goes through this transformation, when her amplified 10,000-fold, that she’s not going to become this super-volatile, unpredictable being? The yin and yang of it all is that obviously she chose Stefan, so I’m sure there’s some hot vamp sex that’s going to happen there, and then when she gets tired of Stefan, who knows… maybe she’ll come to Damon,” he teases.

His initial reaction to what has happened to Elena will not be particularly happy.

“He’s pissed. I mean, what an idiot,” Ian says. “Seriously, why would you ever do that? She’s 18 years old. I’m not saying that she can’t have her own thoughts and feelings and likes and dislikes and desires, but you know, when someone’s 18 and they’ve said ‘I want to die,’ don’t let them. You know what I mean?”

Does this mean an end to Damon’s pining over Elena? “He’s not going to be pining, and this the season of No Pining. This is an Oak season, okay?” Ian jokes. “Look, Season 2 and 3, he did everything they wanted him to do. He tried to be the person that they wanted him to be. He tried to do it. And guess what? It didn’t work. He’s basically saying now, ‘this is who I am, like it or not,’ for lack of better words, ‘go f— yourself.’ Seriously. If you don’t like who I am, then you have no business being in my face, so get out of it. So I think that this year, now, he has this sense of self-worth, in saying ‘You know what? I’ve been around a long time, and you guys are a bunch of morons. This is me’.”

Despite the annoyance of what has happened, Elena becoming a vampire might give her more common ground with the Salvatores. “I think a really cool thing is that Elena’s going to be going through all these things that Damon and Stefan went through. So I think they’re also going to be able to relate with her and connect with her on a very different level. They, for once, really understand what she’s going through,” Somerhalder says. The notion that Elena will now have all of her memories — including a memory of the night where she actually met Damon first — is going to come into play. “I think that adds a very interesting layer, which is kind of like an ‘oh $#!+’ moment, where it’s like ‘wait. I did meet him. And all he did was wish me the best. He said I hope you get everything you want out of life.’ It’s really tragic. It’s really sad. I mean, who knew?” he says.

Another thing that will be altered for Season 4 is that Damon no longer has Alaric to hang out with. “It’s so weird, because life imitates art in many, many ways, and it’s really, really strange not having Matt Davis on set,” Somerhalder says. “I know he has his own show now [Cult], he’s #1 on the call sheet, he’s shooting in Vancouver, 13 episodes a season — bastard! — but it is weird not having him there, and we miss him. And I think it’s not going to be easy for Damon. The loss of any great friend is not easy. I don’t think Damon’s going to be any exception to that rule. They had a full-on bromance, even though Damon was a complete a–hole sometimes, he really misses his only friend in the world.”

Damon might also have trouble opening up to anyone else. “I think it’s going to be a little difficult for him to let anyone in, because he’s at that stage now where he’s just ‘you guys are a bunch of idiots. I was right, this is BS,” Ian says. “Seriously. Yeah. It might take him a little while.”

One journalist asked Somerhalder if Damon will resent Matt after the events of last season’s finale. “Is he going to resent Matt? Matt’s going to have a tough year,” Ian laughs. “I’m not kidding you. Matt’s going to have a really tough year. I feel bad for Matt, actually. And Zach Roerig is literally my brother. There is no separation between my real biological brother and Zach Roerig; that’s how close we are. But he is not going to have a very good year,” he teases.

All in all, Ian seems fond of his character, and points out that there is a “certain honesty” to Damon Salvatore. “You know those people that come into your life where they say what everyone thinks, but just doesn’t have the balls to say it? That’s Damon Salvatore. He just has the balls to say what you don’t,” he says.

The Vampire Diaries Season 4 begins October 11 on The CW. Come by the KSiteTV Forum and join the countdown!
