The first season of Reign concluded last week, with the power shifting next year after the death of King Henry. (Read a recap of the episode here) While Season 2 is months away – likely premiering in October – we couldn’t resist speaking with Queen Catherine herself, Megan Follows, about what we can expect for the Queen next season. We also asked her a bit about reactions to the show’s first year.
Here’s the interview. Our questions to Ms. Follows are in bold; her answers are not.
KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: What was your favorite of the Queen’s moments in Season 1? One of my personal favorites was the confessional scene.
The confessional was good; that just happened! That was fun, I know. I loved how I got all of that off of my chest, and I got to get that out.
I did love all the stuff in the tower, I have to say.
Can you tease how the power dynamic is definitely changed now that Henry is dead?
I can’t really tease anything, because you know as much as I do, and I’m not being coy. I really mean that. So much has happenedā¦ I have no idea. But obviously, huge power shifts. Catherine was a very, very powerful woman, whose power had been — not really in the shadows, but she had to be very careful. So, it’s going to be interesting. She became Queen Consort. She got it into her, basically, contract, that she would be Queen throughout the reigns of her sons. It’s going to be really interesting to see where we go with it.
How do you think she will react to there being another Queen now?
I think she’s going to have two reactions: The private and the public reaction. [laughs] I think publicly, she will be very smart, and know how to have the right appearance and the right show of respect, and privately, she will be thinking very carefully about what this means. Power structures and alliances.
Was there anything about the first season that surprised you?
Everything surprised me. I did love Henry putting me in the tower, trying to annul our marriageā¦ and then what surprised me was my love child with Richard! That surprised me.
Was the fan reaction to the show surprising to you? The show has quite a large fan base.
It surprises you for all the right, great reasons, that you want it to surprise. I’m very happy. We all really believe in it; we love doing it. I like that it’s a response across the board. It’s different ages; that’s what’s surprising, and that’s what I like.
