KSiteTV’s Vancouver Secret Circle Interviews, Part 1: Shelley Hennig (Diana) Speaks!

KSiteTV’s Craig Byrne is just about finished with his visit to Vancouver, BC, where tonight was spent alongside other reporters on the shooting location for the eighth episode of the series — a location that involves some fake lightning and an impressive downpouring of rain.

We spoke with four of the show’s leads — Brittany Robertson, Shelley Hennig, Thomas Dekker, and Phoebe Tonkin — and they gave us some clues about what’s to come. They also previewed tonight’s new episode, which airs at 9PM (ET) October 6 on The CW.

We’ll be rolling these interviews out one by one in the coming days and weeks – for today, enjoy Part 1 – with Shelley Hennig (Diana!)

“A lot has been happening to the Circle,” Hennig tells us about what is going on in the episode they are filming. “They’ve been in a lot of danger, so being [at this location] makes them feel like ‘Okay. We’re kind of away from where all the bad stuff has been happening. Diana’s really pleased with this. We decide to spend the night, and Faye gets the alcohol out from the liquor cabinet, and it’s just a bunch of us playing Truth or Dare in the living room, trying to enjoy ourselves and get our mind off of witchcraft and everything that’s been going wrong,” she says. Does this imply the Circle is more solid by the time we get to Episode 8? “They have their ups and downs. They’re still learning to get along, which really stresses Diana out. But yeah. I’d say some relationships have gotten stronger and some have gotten weaker. It’s just gotten more complicated, with triangles and squares,” she says.

The relationship with the Circle has its peaks, and so does Diana’s personal relationship with her boyfriend, Adam (Thomas Dekker). “It’s definitely going to have its ups and downs. Adam and Diana have been together for three and a half years, so they truly do love each other, but Cassie brings in another element of confusion. It’s really fun to play the ups and downs of the triangle, for sure,” she says. “You’ll be surprised at what Adam and Diana’s relationship really is when they’re not doing witchcraft. Or maybe when they are doing witchcraft. Alone,” she teases.

“Diana and Adam have a really strong, and a long, history. I don’t know about you, but me personally, in real life, and when you watch things like The Notebook, you want the two to be together. All this time goes by, and they can’t, but you still want to go back with that first person. The new person comes in, and there’s that relationship, but as a viewer, I don’t know about you, but when I watch, I always want them to go back to their roots. Like in Sweet Home Alabama as well. Reese Witherspoon – you want her back with the first guy she was ever with. And I think there’s something to be said about that, and I think Diana and Adam have a really special connection and a really great relationship, regardless of what’s happening with Cassie, and I think Adam needs to figure out what that thing is with Cassie. It will be interesting to see if it’s destiny, or if we he is really in love with her,” she adds.

And on the subject of love interests, what about the new character being played by Chris Zylka – is he going to be a love interest for anyone? “Of course! You’re not going to bring in a guy and not have him be a love interest for someone? Look at him! Yeah. He’s definitely a love interest for someone,” she confirms.

The group dynamic of the Circle is appealing to Ms. Hennig. “I think we’re all learning things and we all have secrets, and that’s what I really love about the show. Whenever we’re doing a scene where it’s more than two people, with the rest of the Circle, there are so many things going on in each of our minds, and there are so many complicated relationships between each character. So it’s really fun as an actor to play that. It’s not just Adam and I have been together for 3 1/2 years and I hate Faye. And Cassie’s the new girl and I really like her, but she has something for my boyfriend. No. It’s that times ten. And each character always has a secret, and I think throughout each episode, you start to get some insight about us.”

The older generation of Chance Harbor seems to have secrets of their own, and we asked Shelley if she thinks Diana is on to the idea that her father is hiding things. “I’m sure. Even in the third episode ‘Loner’ you see Diana start to look at her dad like ‘what’s going on?’ Maybe I’ll believe you that you’re dating my principal, maybe you’re not. But I think we’re all suspicious of our parents. There will be a lot of suspicion and surprises with the parents for sure,” she says. And speaking of those surprises and secrets with the parents, what’s coming for Diana and Charles? “There are a lot of father-daughter moments with Diana and her dad. I have really enjoyed shooting those with Gale,” she says.

As we mentioned earlier in this piece, there’s a new Secret Circle episode tonight (see images here) and here’s how Shelley teases it:

“The episode revolves around possession. There’s a lady that’s possessed, and you learn who this lady is and how she’s connected with the Circle, and basically, we’re playing Clue, and we’re trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. Some dangerous stuff happens in the meantime. Diana actually warns Cassie and Adam to not go and find this stuff out yet. We don’t have enough information, but they go behind Diana’s back, along with Faye, of course – the mischievous one. They start things up, and that’s when it gets really dangerous, and something crazy happens at the end of the episode.”
