Lynda Carter was definitely the real-life vision of Wonder Woman for a generation, but to the next generation, Wonder Woman had a certain strength and sound – and that sound was the voice of Susan Eisenberg, who has voiced the character in several projects since the Justice League series premiered a decade ago.
Eisenberg reprises the role in the DC Entertainment direct-to-DVD animated feature Justice League: Doom, which hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today. A few days ago, we caught up with Ms. Eisenberg at the JL: Doom red carpet to talk a bit about the changes to Wonder Woman for this production.
Our questions are printed in bold; Susan Eisenberg’s answers are not.
How is Wonder Woman portrayed differently in Justice League: Doom?
You know, I think she’s tougher. There’s a more grown up quality to her now. In Justice League Unlimited, she was young. Vocally, I did a higher register. She’s tougher. She’s strong. She had those moments, too, in the series, but she’s more mature.
Do you feel a certain responsibility being the holder of the Wonder Woman role, and do you ever get stopped by someone who recognizes your voice?
I feel an incredible responsibility. I think any time you’re entrusted to play a character this iconic, you have to feel privileged, and I do. It’s just a gift. And do I get recognized? If I’m at a party and somebody goes “Sweetie! This is Wonder Woman!” But no. It’s not like I’m at the grocery store and somebody goes “That’s Wonder Woman!” No.
Do you have a particular favorite moment in Justice League: Doom where Wonder Woman gets to do something kind of amazing?
There are some fighting scenes that are pretty fantastic, I’ve got to say. And again, there are some moments with J’Onn that I love. J’Onn and Wonder Woman have this very special chemistry, and I love that.
