Odette Annable has seen her character Geri take some surprising directions in Season 2 of The CW television series Walker, with the biggest possibly being that she is the daughter of Gale Davidson, matriarch of the Walker family’s biggest rivals. The Davidsons are now living on the Walker ranch, and the two feuding families will unite tonight for a dinner together. Considering they came together the previous week to save Colton, could some better feelings remain, or will this just be awkward?
The episode “A Matter of Miles” (see preview photos here) airs at 8PM ET/PT tonight (June 16) on The CW, and KSiteTV had the opportunity to speak to Odette Annable for some thoughts on Geri’s current state in the series as well as how this dinner party will go down.
KSITETV: With all of the family drama going on with this show, were you surprised when you got a script and found them all having a dinner party?
ODETTE ANNABLE: You know, nothing is shocking to me at this point. There have been so many ups and downs, and twists and turns, and all of the things that you want to see in in a drama, so I was I was pleasantly surprised to see all of the drama come under one roof – under one dinner table – to see how it all unfolded.
Is it true dinner table scenes take a lot more time to film, because everybody needs coverage?
It is true, but they also are the most fun to film. In this specific scene, Keegan Allen and I were sitting next to each other, and it was one of those things where his first line just really made me giggle, and I couldn’t stop, and it got him going. Unfortunately, it was on our coverage, so everyone else had to just sit there and watch us have a laugh attack while we tried to pull it together. So, there’s never a dull moment when you have one of those big dinner scenes. It’s so much fun. Everybody gets together. Usually, you’re not working with everybody at the same time, so it’s always a treat.
Is it hard for Geri to kind of feel stuck in the middle of the worlds of the Walkers and the Davidsons?
Yes, I think it’s weighed very heavily on her heart. You know her. Her heart is always with the Walkers and she considers herself a Walker, and she’s sort of been primed to dislike the Davidsons because of all of the stories that she’s heard over the years, so to find out that she is in fact one of the Davidsons… I think it was a major shock for her, and a big adjustment.
Geri has had so much loss in her life, so trying to find that balance between still being a part of the Walker family, but also embracing this new family of hers, has been something of a great exploration for her this year.
And what is it like sitting at a dinner table with someone who on TV is your brother-in-law, but in real life is your husband?
Dave and I have worked together a few times, so [by] now, we’re over it. We’re over each other. It’s like, “oh, you’re working with somebody else? Wonderful,” because I see him at home, and then I see him at work, and it’s all too much.
But truly, it’s been such a joy having him on, and everybody loves him. They probably love him a little too much. I mean, when he walked on set during this episode, we were already shooting… and he got a standing ovation and a round of applause. I was like, “wait a second. I don’t get that treatment! What’s going on here?” Everybody loves Dan Miller, and I am just tickled that we get to work together again. It’s such a treat.
If Dan and Denise go through with their divorce, might Dan be Geri’s type?
You know, I was thinking the same thing. I don’t know. I mean, Geri’s got a lot going on to add Dan Miller to her plate. That would be interesting. I’m not going to close any doors. How about that?
Can you tease what we have to look forward to in Thursday night’s episode without spoiling anything?
I would say the biggest treat of the episode is watching everybody’s reaction during that dinner scene, because as an actor and being in the scene myself, every time I would see it, I would watch someone different, and it was always a different performance. It was so funny and fun. I challenge you to try to catch every reaction that you can during that set-up.
Is it safe to say that Geri might learn some new things?
Absolutely. These last few episodes are explosive, specifically for Geri.
Do you think there’s a still a future for Geri and Cordell?
I would like to hope so. I think these two have a tremendous amount of love for each other. Not only are they best friends, but they stepped into a different kind of zone this year. It might have been too soon, this go-round, for them, but I think that there’s still so much to explore between their relationship and learning about each other in a different way. I definitely think that the door is going to be open, to see what happens there.
Do you think Stella and Colton are living proof that a Walker and a Davidson can be compatible?
Potentially, yes. But you never know. With Walker, things could go south very quickly.
A lot of fans are tweeting me wanting to know: Will you be in Season 3?
I will be in Season 3. Yes. Absolutely.
What has it been like for Geri to get to know Gale?
I think it’s a delicate dance that Geri is weaving with Gale. I think the human animalistic side of her, and the curious side of her, wants to get to know who her mother is. She’s her biological mother, snd I think she has a lot of compassion for her. Especially given everything that Geri’s been through in her life, I think that she’s just an empathetic person, and she has a lot of compassion for Gale. But at the same time, I think she’s still walking on eggshells with her, because she’s still trying to figure out what her motives are, who she is, what the truth is, and what she may potentially be hiding.
As an actor, you have different characters who are kind of established in certain locations, so is it odd for you to see a different family living on the Walker sets of their house?
Yes. I think it was unsettling for everyone, especially walking in and seeing all of the furniture rearranged and different stuff in there, and it felt empty and cold. Even though you’re an actor, and you know that it’s all made up, you still have some kind of feeling, because it was so warm and welcoming when it was the Walker ranch, and it just has a different vibe with the Davidsons. It felt like it was echoey, and a little creepy.
What has been the best part of the Walker experience for you?
Oh, my gosh. I just can’t stop raving about the show. I feel so grateful to be a part of it. It was something that came as a surprise to me because I moved to Texas, and then a month later, I was given the opportunity to be a part of the show, andthose times were so uncertain then; they still really are for everybody, but it was the one thing that gave me some sort of stability and a feeling of wide open arms and it was a welcome bonus, especially living in a brand new place.
And I just love everybody on the show. The creators are wonderful; so supportive. Our hair and makeup team, our whole crew… we’re all just… I know you hear it all the time, but it really feels like a big family and it’s such a well oiled machine. A lot of this crew is the same crew from Friday Night Lights, so they know what they’re doing, and it makes everyone’s job so much easier.
What was your reaction when you found that Jared Padalecki has a daughter named Odette?
I found that out a few years ago, actually, when I saw Jared and Genevieve with Jensen [Ackles] and [his wife] Danneel, who I’m also friends with, and they said that they were naming their daughter Odette. I was like “WHAT? She’s gonna be the coolest chick ever!” And guess what… she is!
Is there anyone you’d really like to have more scenes with in Season 3?
I was able to do one scene with Jeff Pierre, and I loved working with him. I think he’s such a great guy, and I would love to see a little more of that.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to the fans who will be reading this?
I’m just so grateful for all the fans. Without them, we really wouldn’t have a show, so I’m saying thank you, and sending love, and I hope that they like what we have for them for the end of the season, and I hope they stick around for the entirety of the show.
