Mackenzie Crook is an actor best known for his roles in the original version of The Office, Game of Thrones, and the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Starting on Sunday, November 17, he will be playing the character of Rudy Lom in the new FOX series Almost Human.
Rudy is the man in charge of the hardware end of the android partnering system of the police in the year 2038. Rudy is a bit eccentric and a bit to himself, but when played by Crook, he’s also a character who could be a fast fan favorite.
We spoke with Crook at an Almost Human filming location in Vancouver last month to get more details about his character, starting with his relationship with the robotic side of the force.
“He’s got a complex relationship with these robots,” Crook told us. “He pours all of himself, his soul, into his work. He’s a craftsman, and so he has this very personal connection with all of his creations, but especially the Dorian model, the DRN model. I think we’ll find out more about his relationship with that, and the creation of that – the synthetic soul program that he was a part of. He relates to the robots in a more human way than probably any of the other characters,” he expanded.
Rudy’s view of robotic beings might come into conflict with John Kennex (Karl Urban), whose initial reaction to being paired with a non-human partner is rathe hostile. “They sort have this sparring thing going on, him and Kennex,” Crook confirmed. “He does, somehow, get on with John better than he does with other people. I guess he’s known him for a long time, and he went through some stuff with him before his accident a few years back. So, even though they have a little bit of a fractious relationship, I think he likes him, and they like each other, John and Rudy. It’s quite a nice threesome, with Dorian, John, and Rudy,” he explained.
There also might be reasons why Rudy is so connected with robots in a way he doesn’t connect with other humans — but that, of course, will have to be revealed as the show progresses. “I think he’s a lot deeper character than we’ve seen so far, and I think there’s something troubled about him, and I’m not sure what that is. He’s sort of chosen this insular life for himself, and I’d like to know the reasons for that, and what he’s been through to get to that,” he teased.
Almost Human premieres Sunday night, November 17 and Monday night, November 18 on FOX. Don’t miss it and check out our Almost Human hub for trailers and more on the show! More interviews are coming!
