Several weeks ago before the Vampire Diaries panel at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, KSiteTV participated in roundtable interviews with cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries including Julie Plec, Paul Wesley, Joseph Morgan and Kevin Williamson. Our previous interviews can be found here, but what we hadn’t posted yet is what Kevin Williamson, writer and executive producer extraordinaire, had to say.
So, sadly, this is our last Comic-Con Vampire Diaries interview… for now. Hopefully you’ll enjoy it though. Don’t forget to visit our dedicated Vampire Diaries site, VampireSite.net, and be sure to join the discussion on our Vampire Diaries forum!
Please do not reproduce this interview onto other websites. Instead, just place a link to KSiteTV! Questions to Kevin are posted in bold; Kevin’s answers are not. Season 3 of the Vampire Diaries starts September 15 on The CW!
What is coming in the new season?
In the first episode Damon dies, and he’s off the show forever. Right? No.
It’s really hard to talk about the show because my desire to talk about it – I’d go over there and ask Julie, “Are we talking about this? And can we say this? Or this?” I don’t know. I talk too much. A show like this rests on its twists and turns. That’s the fun of the show. That’s why I like to write it. So the last thing I want to do is give too much away.
We break it down into chapters, and I would say the first chapter is clearly Klaus. We’re going to watch what Klaus is doing with Stefan, what he’s up to. What is this hybrid about? We’re going to try to get into the Original family this year, and understand who they were and what they were about. Perhaps meet a few of them. And if you remember the mythology of the first year, Elijah explained there’s eight family members, and Klaus is kind of a bastard child. He always has been. And now he’s a hybrid, and he’s all alone. And I would imagine the first thing he wants to do is change that.
What is the appeal of a show like this, where the vampires aren’t bad, but more in a grey area?
They are in a grey area, and no more so than Damon, who is this reluctant hero who’s not meant to be a hero. It’s not his answer. Saving people’s lives is never the answer. And now he is, and he sort of has to be, or he’s going to risk losing Elena, and her trust, and her friendship, because Elena’s not okay with that. So it’s very interesting – it’s one step forward, three steps back for Damon, and I think he’s going to continue to wrestle with it until he can’t wrestle with it anymore, and it will explode, and implode, and a lot of stuff will go down. I think it will also climax with what happens with him and Elena, at some point.
Elena is wrestling with what Katherine told her last year, which is “it’s okay to love both of them.” And she will. And she does. But what kind of love is it? Because we all know there’s all sorts of love out there. Is it romantic love?
This is a story about Stefan and Elena’s love story. I think it’s fun to watch the twists and turns that we take. Because you know what? She doesn’t know.
Where will Katherine be this year?
That’s a good question. However, I can’t [say], because I don’t know.
Katherine does play a part in this year, without question. But we have so much ground to cover in the beginning [of the season], that the first six episodes, she’ll come in, without question. But in terms of her relationships and her huge storyline, we’re not going to focus on much of that in the first six. She’s very instrumental in what happens, but once again, she doesn’t get into this big, rich storyline, because we’re so busy telling Klaus, Stefan, and Original family stuff. We’ve got Jeremy seeing dead people. We’ve got so much to tell, so much ground to cover… but we’ll get to it.
How do these ghosts from Jeremy’s past factor into Season 3?
They factor in to Season 3 in a major way. It’s not so apparent at first, but once you watch the show, you understand what is going on, and you understand why Jeremy – that hour that he died – was an opportunity, and it’s interesting to watch him respond and figure it out and have Bonnie there to help him. He’s sort of torn between two lovers, plus a witch. It’s going to be fun.

Kevin said: “This is a story about Stefan and Elena’s love story.” I think some Delena fans would definitely attacked him there if there were no securities…lol
You had to understand the tone. Plus right before that he said something about how love and soul mates aren’t necessarily meant to be together. I think he was a lot vaguer than it sounded.
