The second season of ABC Family’s Chasing Life premieres Monday night, July 6 at 9PM. The show’s return is a bit earlier than a lot of fans expected, but it is certainly welcome.
Haley Ramm plays Brenna, sister of Italia Ricci’s April Carver, on the ABC Family series, and we spoke with her a few weeks ago about what’s coming up for her character, romantically and otherwise. Our apologies that the background sets behind the interview look – not so good – but rest assured that no one from Chasing Life really will hang out in such places on the show.
You can watch the interview video below, and if the written word is more your thing, you can find that underneath.
KSITETV’s CRAIG BYRNE: We hear Brenna has a new romance this season. Can you talk about that?
HALEY RAMM: I actually have a couple. It’s never easy with Brenna, really. But yeah, I do. I have a new love interest. Brenna is dating again. She is still on good terms with Greer. That ended in a very mature way, I think, for high school, at least. So, yeah. She’s dating again. She ends up having a really sweet relationship that I am very excited to see how that plays out, and what Sean and the rest of the writing staff do with that.
Do you like playing a character who isn’t as defined in her sexuality?
Yes. I love it. I think it’s just bringing a lot of attention to the topic. It makes it normal. She never had to explain herself to anyone. Her family was always very accepting. She kind of just said it, and then kept saying it, and it became normal, which I think was the best way to do it. I think in a lot of shows there is this big scene – which is appropriate to other characters – but it just wasn’t a big deal. And I think that’s kind of more powerful, just saying “hey, this is what it is.”
It feels like the storyline has been very honest and not exploitative.
It has been very honest. I respect the writers so much and am so grateful that that is the path they decided to go down. They make it so easy.
Can you talk about how Brenna will respond to the return of April’s cancer?
The return of the cancer is hard on everyone. I think they were all so hopeful, and then it all came crashing down, but the thing about the Carver family is they’re never stuck in a rut. They’re going to get over it, and they’re going to be positive, and they’re going to have a good time doing it, and look at the silver lining.
Has being a part of Chasing Life changed your life?
Yeah. I actually think it has. Just being positive, really, and being yourself. I think that those are the two things that I’ve learned the most from the show. And it’s like, how can you not? Because you read the scripts, you’re in the table read, and you pick up on things, and you think “yeah, I could incorporate that into my own life.” It being a show about life, I’ve learned a lot.
Beyond romance, what excites you the most about the new season?
Oh, the drama, really. We have a big sisterly fight in Episode 3 which was so much fun. It’s kind of like a little cat fight. The love, of course. Just so much drama, really, and so much fun. Everyone is just having fun and being themselves, so that’s the thing that I’m the most excited for people to see.
Why should people tune in to Season 2 when it premieres on July 6?
People should tune in to Season 2 because it’s going to be super fun, and we have a lot going on. Lots of love, lots of fun, lots of everything. It’s just about living life the best way we know how; living it to the fullest.
And do you have any final words for your fans?
Yeah. Thank you for watching, and thank you for being so supportive of these characters, because they are a little bit different, and are going through something that is tough, and sometimes that is not always the prettiest. But I think we make it fun.
