At this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, we spoke with several members of the Constantine creative team, including cast and producers. You can find some of those previous interviews here.
Today, we share our roundtable interview with Charles Halford, who plays John Constantine’s right-hand man, “Chas,” on the NBC adaptation of the DC/Vertigo comic books, which premieres in exactly two months, on October 24. Here’s the video:
Here are some highlights:
– On Chas’ working relationship with John Constantine: “It’s growing every week. The longer we work together, and the more time we spend together, that just seems to grow. I think as the writers absorb that, then they’re giving us a lot more to work with. We’re having a lot more fun.” Halford says that first and foremost, they’re really old friends. “Therefore, Chas just doesn’t really take any crap from John. I mean, John throws a lot of crap out. John’s also a reluctant hero, and so it takes some prodding and poking and motivating, and Chas is there to make sure that he’s fed and bathed, and he’s not staying at the bar TOO late, which never really works out, but he’s there to kinda keep him to task, and hold him accountable to a certain degree, so he doesn’t just blow it all off.”
– On Chas’ survival ability: “We will be getting into that. I’m not sure of the exact timeline, but as we go on, you can count on getting all of the information in due time.”
– “I can tell you that I get beat up more,” Halford says about what’s coming up for Chas after the pilot. “I think the thrills and the spills just get bigger and better each week, and there’s also a lot of fun kind of humor that’s coming out of it. John [Constantine] is evolving more, and obviously with the backstory that’s coming out, and the introduction of Zed is awesome, because it allows for more give and take with John. It’s just growing into a really dynamic show, I think.”
– If Chas was to meet the Chas of the Constantine movie, played by Shia LaBeouf, would he want to beat him up? “Would I want to beat him up?” Halford laughs. “I don’t know that much about the movie. In all honesty, I really haven’t seen it in its entirety, and I’ve kind of neglected seeing it since I’ve been doing this. But I’ve got nothing personal against Mr. LaBeouf.”
