The Winchesters enter their seventh season on September 23, as part of a new CW Friday line-up where Supernatural will be preceded by Nikita.
At this week’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, KSiteTV was one of the media outlets that sat down at a roundtable with the series’ showrunner and executive producer, Sera Gamble.
Here, she talks a bit about what’s coming in the new season’s opening episodes. Beware of spoilers!

Where will Sam and Dean be coming from as the season begins?
We’re going to pick up the season right from that crazy cliffhanger. They are reeling from what’s been going on with this character who is essentially one of the best friends they’ve ever had. This is a turn that they didn’t see coming with Castiel. If stuff wasn’t falling apart so fast, they would probably be emotionally falling apart a little bit more, but it’s like they’re too busy dealing with the fact that Castiel has just kind of declared himself the new God to even really fall apart.
The substance of Episode One kind of starts there. They’ve both dealt with a lot of loss right in a row, probably especially Dean. So we start from there and we see what happens. Of course also, Sam’s wall just came down, and he did get it together to go try and help everybody in that lab, but we’d figure that was quite a burst of adrenaline, that “Mom lifting the car off the baby” type adrenaline, and it doesn’t last forever. So we deal with what it looks like for his wall to be down, and what that really entails for him.
Will we be seeing Mark Sheppard (Crowley) returning this season?
Yes. You will see him very early in the season. Castiel said that he wasn’t killing him because he had plans for him, and we will reveal what those plans might be. And Mark Sheppard is, as usual, extremely funny.
How many episodes will he be in?
This is a question that’s coming up a lot about a lot of characters, and I would love to answer it, but it’s always really spoilery to say how often characters are going to be in the show, especially characters who might perceived as antagonistic, because that goes to what the story’s going to be, and who might win.
I can safely say that Bobby’s in a certain number of episodes, but beyond that, I have to respectfully say it’s too spoilery.
Is there an “end game” in mind for the show?
We communicate in an ongoing basis with the studio, and we would hope they’d give us early warning. We plot responsibly. We have ideas, should the show continue for several seasons, and we have ideas, should we not get to – I don’t want to say a specific number of seasons, because that “Five Year Plan” thing has been haunting us a little bit. But yes. We’re being responsible. We promise.
Are we going to see more with the Alpha Monsters, and will we see Lucky coming back?
We loved that actor. We have a lot of monsters in the first half of the season. We don’t have a story with any of the Alphas you’ve seen, per se. It’s funny. Lucky’s name has been brought up in the room a couple of times, but we don’t have a story for him yet.
Are we going to see any new kinds of creatures this season?
We always pull a couple of variations out of our pocket. There will be new creatures that we’ll reveal over the course of episodes, and there will be hopefully the kind of thing where the episode will end and then people will go break Twitter, hopefully. That’s what we aim for.
