Being a con-artist requires the ability to diminish the self in favor of the job. During a con, you have to compartmentalize your own wants, needs, hopes, and dreams for the greater good lest you risk not only losing out on a primo payday but being found out. Keeping your actual self from dipping into the life of your current self is the best way to ensure a clean and easy job, but even the most ardent of con-artists is still human at the end of the day and when something happens to disrupt this newly constructed identity, it can be difficult to put that genie back in the bottle. Such is the case with Maddie, whose normally impeccable approach to conning has been flustered by her attraction to Patrick and repulsion toward Gary. Though she knows that Patrick is someone she can’t have in her line of work, and that he’s only being drawn in by this new persona she’s adopted, he’s someone that Maddie just can’t leave alone for some reason and that’s beginning to seep into the con.
On the next episode of Imposters, Maddie’s two worlds collide as Gary catches Maddie having a moment with Patrick. It was one thing for Maddie’s heart and head to be conflicted by Gary and Patrick, as neither had been aware of the other’s existence and there was enough physical and emotional distance between both that Maddie was (mostly) able to keep her personal feelings from interfering with her business. Now, however, she’s made things more difficult for herself by causing Patrick to doubt her sincerity and stirring up the first big fight with Gary; Maddie already told Max that this con was on the way to being over, but she’s going to have to work that much harder to earn back Gary’s trust and make that last push toward cleaning him out for good. While one can wonder just how much of this was intentional self-sabotage, her subconscious working hard to free herself from a life she no longer wanted, Maddie not only has to clean up the emotional (and potentially financial) damage she caused, she has to deal with the arrival of The Doctor’s fixer Lenny Cohen, who’s been sent to Seattle to ensure that she stays focused on the con and away from Patrick.
Elsewhere on Imposters, a dangerous discovery by Sally could have serious consequences for the con, while Ezra, Jules, and Richard head to Pennsylvania to meet with Maddie’s parents.
Imposters airs Tuesdays at 10:00 on Bravo.
Will Maddie be able to keep her burgeoning relationship with Patrick from throwing off the con and ruining things with Roger? Could Sally’s discovery have something to do with the money underneath Gary’s floorboards? What new information will Ezra, Jules, and Richard glean from their time in Pennsylvania?
