ABC has officially cancelled freshman family comedy Imaginary Mary. The series was unlucky in that it premiered deep into a season where ABC found two comedy successes in American Housewife and Speechless, further reducing the need for marginal renewals. Though it showed some ratings promise, between the lag needed for CGI production and the network not owning it, Mary ultimately wasn’t needed for next season.
From Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs), David Guarascio (Just Shoot Me!), and Patrick Osborne (Feast), Imaginary Mary followed Alice (Jenna Elfman), a single public relations executive who falls in love with handsome single father Ben. Though on the outside it looks like Alice has everything she ever wanted, she soon becomes consumed by her anxiety over the possibility of becoming a surrogate mother to Ben’s children, so much so that former childhood imaginary friend Mary reappears to help her through her fear.
In addition to Elfman, Imaginary Mary starred Stephen Schneider (Best Friends Forever) and Rachel Dratch (Saturday Night Live).
The series finale of Imaginary Mary is set to air Tuesday, May 16th on ABC, the same day the network will be unveiling its plans for 2017-18. You can check out what KSiteTV thought their schedule could look like here.
