Hulu has announced that they’ve acquired the SVOD rights to ABC comedies Boy Meets World, Home Improvement, and Dinosaurs, with each series premiering on the streaming service today.
Boy Meets World ran from 1993 to 2000 and followed Philadelphia middle schooler Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) into his college years and subsequent marriage to childhood sweetheart Topanga (Danielle Fishel). The series was spun off into Disney’s Girl Meets World, which told the story of Cory and Topanga’s daughter Riley.
Based on the stand up of Tim Allen, Home Improvement chronicled the lives of the Taylor family, a Detroit brood headed by accident-prone TV host Tim (Allen) and wife Jill (Patricia Richardson). This will be the first time Home Improvement is available through a streaming service.
Set in 60,000,003 BC in Pangaea, Dinosaurs followed the Sinclairs, a family of anthropomorphic dinosaurs. The series was developed by Jim Henson well into the final months of his life.
The deal for the trio of shows comes after Hulu grabbed a handful of fellow ABC comedies including Full House and Step by Step, all of which also premiere today. It’s been a busy time for Hulu, which has also recently acquired the rights to Will & Grace, 30 Rock, Parenthood, and Face Off, among others. The move is a way of deepening the service’s already solid television library and adding enough value to go along with their originals to entice people to subscribe.
