Hulu scripted series Battleground is returning for a second season almost six years after it debuts. However, the political comedy isn’t being revived by the streamer, which has been gaining ground in the arms race with Netflix in recent months. Instead, Battleground is resurfacing as a podcast.
Though we’ve had podcasts break through the pop culture clutter before (e.g. Serial) and there are podcasts made into television shows (e.g. TV Land’s Throwing Shade, Amazon’s upcoming Homecoming), this might be the first time that a cancelled television series resurfaces as a podcast. Typically, if a cancelled show is to continue through some form other than television, it’s usually a comic book or graphic novel series as a way to wrap-up (and sometimes continue) its storylines. For a low-profile show like Battleground to not only get a second life half a decade later but also do it in an unusual way shows just how wide the bounds of Peak TV have become.
From J.D. Walsh (Two and a Half Men), Battleground followed the inner-workings of a Democratic primary for a vacant Senate seat in Wisconsin. The second season, which features season one players Teri Reeves (Chicago Fire) and Jack De Sena (Avatar), picks up with campaign manager Chris “Tak” Davis (Jay Hayden) working to get a Republican candidate through a tough primary in New Hampshire.
