HBO has released the trailer for His Dark Materials, its upcoming fantasy drama.
Based on the bestselling Philip Pullman trilogy of the same name, with Jack Thorne (The Fades) adapting for television, His Dark Materials follows 13-year-old Lyra (Dafne Keen), a brave young orphan girl who goes on the adventure of a lifetime when she discovers that a friend has been kidnapped. Lyra’s search for her loved one uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children and a much needed ally in Will, a determined young boy with whom she encounters extraordinary beings, dangerous secrets, and worlds not of our own.
In addition to Keen, His Dark Materials stars James McAvoy as Lord Asriel Belacqua, a brilliant scholar with limitless ambition; Ruth Wilson as enigmatic Mrs. Coulter, a controlling woman with a mysterious past who has ascended to the top of a patriarchal society; Lin Manuel-Miranda as aeronaut-for-hire Lee Scoresby; Clarke Peters as The Master of Jordan College, Lyra’s guardian as she grows up in Oxford; Georgina Campbell as inquisitive Adele Starminster, a journalist looking into Mrs. Coulter’s origins; Lewin Lloyd as 12-year-old Roger Parslow, Lyra’s best friend who works as the kitchen boy at Jordan College; Anne-Marie Duff as high-ranking gyptian Ma Costa, reeling from the disappearance of her son Billy; and Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala, queen of the Lake Enara clan, a 300-year-old witch with ties to the gyptians who believes Lyra is the answer to an ancient prophecy.
