Hulu has released a first look at upcoming costume drama Harlots and in it, we see that the business of selling sex has never gone out of style.
From Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre) and set in 18th century London, Harlots follows Margaret Wells (two-time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton) as she attempts to reconcile the two sides of herself – brothel owner and mother of two. Though the balancing act between Margaret’s public and private selves is difficult at first, it’s manageable until her business comes under attack by a rival madam. It is then that Margaret is forced into fighting back, lest she lose her business and find herself on the streets with her daughters. But will she be ready for the world to know just exactly how she makes her money? And will Margaret be able to keep her brothel from going belly up?
In addition to Morton, Harlots stars Eloise Smith (Fortitude), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey), and Lesley Manville (Maleficient). The series is part of Hulu’s further expansion into original scripted programming and joins fellow freshman drama The Handmaid’s Tale on the streaming service’s spring slate. Among Hulu’s current original programs are medical drama Chance, romantic comedy The Mindy Project, and The Path, arguably the platform’s most acclaimed property.
Harlots is set to premiere Wednesday, March 29th on Hulu.
Will you be watching Harlots? Is this the type of project that can further legitimize Hulu as a place for quality scripted content? What type of drama would you like to see Hulu develop in the future?
