Green Lantern HBO Max Series Changes Course

The long-in-development Green Lantern TV series for HBO Max has changed course.

While the original plan was to feature Lanterns from across the world of DC history, starting with Alan Scott who was already cast with Jeremy Irvine and Guy Gardner as played by Finn Wittrock, the show has a new focus according to the Hollywood Reporter: The lead character will now be John Stewart, the Green Lantern perhaps best known to a generation as he was the primary Green Lantern in WB’s Justice League animated projects and also was the star of recent Green Lantern comics.

A full season of eight episodes had already been written under writer Seth Grahame-Smith who has departed the project after several regime changes at DC and Warner Bros.; Marc Guggenheim, best known as one of the main architects of The CW’s Arrowverse, is also said to not be recently involved. Greg Berlanti’s production company is still part of the new show.

While many might see this as David Ramsey’s chance to play a Green Lantern, as it was heavily implied that his Arrow character was another universe’s John Stewart, especially since it appeared he was given a ring in the Arrow season finale. However, it is likely that new producers will take things in a totally new direction rather than using a character with baggage. We shall see what happens.
