NBC has given workplace comedy Great News a 13-episode second season, up from the current season’s 10 installments. The news comes as a bit of a surprise, given the sharp downturn the show’s ratings took last week, but between NBC’s desire to have a good relationship with executive producer Tina Fey, the show’s positive reviews, and the show being decidedly on-brand, the network decided it was worth it to take a chance on another season.
From Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock) and executive produced by Fey and Robert Carlock (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Great News tells the story of up-and-coming news producer Katie (Briga Heelan) who finds herself having to work alongside overbearing mother Carol (Andrea Martin) after the latter becomes an intern at the news station she works at.
In addition to Heelan and Martin, Great News stars Adam Campbell (Harper’s Island), Nicole Richie (Candidly Nicole), Horatio Sanz (Saturday Night Live), and John Michael Higgins (Happily Divorced). The series joins a comedy slate that includes Superstore, Will & Grace, The Good Place, and A.P. Bio.
Great News airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on NBC. The network will be releasing its 2017-18 schedule on Sunday, May 14th; you can check out what KSiteTV thought could happen here.
