Freeform has canceled two more shows, and one of them has a tie to when they were still called ABC Family. Cruel Summer is ending after only two seasons, and Good Trouble — which was a spinoff of the ABC Family series The Fosters — will be ending after the upcoming second half of Season 5.
The Hollywood Reporter was first to reveal this news. They noted that Freeform wanted to renew both series, but the ratings couldn’t cover the budget. Additionally, Freeform isn’t available in as many households as it was before, and the larger Disney company is looking to cut costs.
They join the spinoff Grown-ish which will also be ending in 2024. The remaining new episodes of Good Trouble begin January 2, and hopefully, there has been enough notice that the world of Good Trouble and The Fosters will have a satisfying conclusion.
Good Trouble stars Cierra Ramirez, Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Bryan Craig, Emma Hunton, Tommy Martinez, Josh Pence and Booboo Stewart. It is executive produced by Joanna Johnson, Christine Sacani, Greg Gugliotta, Jennifer Lopez, Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Cierra Ramirez. Johnson also serves as showrunner.
Season 2 of Cruel Summer starred Sadie Stanley, Lexi Underwood, Griffin Gluck, KaDee Strickland, Lisa Yamada and Sean Blakemore. Paul Adelstein and Braeden De La Garza will recur. Cruel Summer comes from studio eOne and was created by Bert V. Royal. Elle Triedman serves as showrunner. Executive producers include Triedman, Bill Purple, Tia Napolitano and Iron Ocean Productions’ Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple. The series is produced and distributed internationally by eOne.
