After ordering three franchise dramas and a comedy earlier this spring, CBS added to its 2021-22 slate on Friday by picking up medical drama Good Sam and bowling comedy Smallwood.
From Katie Wech (Rizzoli & Isles), Good Sam follows Sam (Sophia Bush), a talented but stifled surgeon who embraces her leadership role after her renowned and pompous boss falls into a coma. Once he awakens and wants to resume surgery, it’s up to Sam to supervise this man who never acknowledged her abilities and also happens to be her father.
In addition to Bush, the series stars Jason Isaacs (Awake), Edwin Hodge (Mayans MC), Skye P. Marshall (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Michael Stahl-David (Almost Family), Davi Santos (Tell Me a Story), Omar Maskati (68 Whiskey), and Wendy Crewson (Departure).
A late pilot order, Smallwood centers on Tom (Pete Holmes), a seemingly ordinary man who decides to follow his dream of becoming a pro bowler after being laid off from the assembly line at the GM factory.
In addition to Holmes, the series, created by Mike & Molly‘s Mark Gross, stars Chi McBride (Hawaii Five-0) and Katie Lowes (Scandal).
With these pickups, CBS has made decisions on every pilot bar True Lies, which was pushed to midseason 2022 contention after a March order. Among the pilots that were passed on were Patrick Dempsey political drama Ways & Means; How to Succeed Without Hurting Men’s Feelings, a workplace comedy from Sarah Cooper; and Welcome to Georgia, a mother-daughter comedy starring Hannah Simone and Elizabeth Hurley.
