Phoebe finally found the sense of purpose she had been missing through her relationship with Gemma. The gobbledygook title that was created for her made her feel important and elite, while she was mesmerized by the life of someone so famous and the fact that she actually got to share in it. Granted, Phoebe was also drawn to the freespiritedness of the position and how she was able to tap into her strengths without being suffocated by too much structure, but Gemma’s affection played into her sense of sadness about how her modeling career went and provided the type of status boost she needed after losing alimony. But becoming so entwined with Gemma pushed away the first good guy she met in a long time and on the next episode of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, she’s forced to come to grips with the space between them.
While out on an errand for Gemma, Phoebe is forced to return to JD’s loft and face him for the first time since he left the party. Adding into the subtext is the fact that Gemma ditched her in the same way she tried to ditch her friends, underlining the fact that while the two party together, she’s essentially a glorified assistant and the closeness that she feels with Gemma was purely one-sided. It was a shallow relationship that was all about status and flash, evidence that the effects of the lifestyle Phoebe led for years with her husband are still engrained in her and that for all her Earth Mother posturing, she cares more about perception and wealth that she likes to admit. It’s a lot to take in, but the fact that she has the self-awareness to begin rebuilding the areas of her life she’d been neglecting is ultimately a good thing. She just now has to figure out how to convince JD that they should give things another chance.
Elsewhere on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Abby and Barbara continue clashing over financial issues related to their site, while Abby cautions Lily against becoming sexually active, Delia takes her relationship with Paul to the next level, and Jo confronts Albert at a silent retreat.
