Despite the fact that Abby’s breakdown is firmly in her rear view mirror, the effects of it still linger, as she’s had a rough time putting the pieces back together and emerging on the other side of such a trying time. Not only is she at a career crossroads, with her self-help identity kaput and her editor half her age, she doesn’t have Jake to lean on emotionally, she’s grappling with being menopausal and what that means in terms of her mortality and sexuality, and she’s not been able to fully adjust to a world where her professional life doesn’t take priority over everything else she has going. Try as she might, Abby McCarthy simply isn’t a baseball mom, yet that resistance to domesticity, to building her day-to-day life around extracurriculars and school projects, pushed her to finally make a career move, with the romance novel in full bloom. But what happens when the feeling behind the words she’s splashed on screen manifests itself in real life?
On the next episode of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Abby finds herself stuck on a baseball trip with Mike, the rest of the team, and a whole fleet of athletically-minded parents. The time away from home might not afford her much opportunity to write, given everything that comes with this type of excursion, but all is not lost, as Abby finds a little inspiration for her writing thanks to a romantic encounter with Mike. Having already inspired Abby’s push into the romance genre, Mike shows 2-8’s mom a more vulnerable side to himself before the two share their first kiss; while there’s been an underlying tension between Abby and Mike from their first meeting, there’s a possibility that Abby’s immersion into the world of her characters has sped up the real life relationship with her son’s coach. Her creative side deeply exploring her attraction to Mike, combined with her need for professional accomplishment and desire to prove that she’s not scared to try new things, push her into a situation she’s only written about before, a far cry from the normally trepidacious way she approaches men and making the first move. But Abby needs to be careful to separate her professional and personal lives going forward, lest she wind up using Mike for material vs. getting to know him on a real level, in addition to keeping in mind that Charlie loves being on the team too much for things to become awkward now.
Elsewhere on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Delia, Barbara, Jo, and Phoebe take a trip of their own, wherein Jo spends her time worrying about Frumpkis and Phoebe becomes entangled with a billionaire playgirl.
