The first days of Abby’s journey as full-time mommy weren’t quite as successful as she would have wanted. For years, she was accustomed to having a very full plate, as she would have to be mom, wife, friend, writer, and everything in between, sometimes all in the same day. It was an existence filled to the brim with love and responsibility, with expectation and fulfillment, and something that Abby was more attached to than she might have realized. But with her divorce from Jake finalized and her professional life in limbo, Abby didn’t know how to just focus on the other aspects of her life, hence her notes on Barbara’s article overcompensating for her lack of professional obligation and her bid to become the perfect homemaker mostly weirding her kids out. As much as Abby might want to focus on just being a mom and being a friend, she knows that she needs to find something else to occupy her time and, for the sake of her relationship with Jake, make a little money at the same time.

On the next episode of Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Abby begins reaching out into the writing world in order to figure out her next move. Although there might not be much demand for self-help author Abby McCarthy considering the coverage of her relationship with Carl, Abby can still have a career if she’s willing to open her mind and expand her authorial repertoire. While she decides to join Barbara out on the town as the latter looks for the personal experience necessary to make her columns better, Abby is weighing an opportunity to write a romance novel, something that she never would have entertained before the recent turns her life took. Abby might not be a hard literature writer, but there’s a stigma attached to romance novels despite their presence in the literary market that could make someone with her experience reticent about attaching “romance novel author” to her CV. But the world of writing has changed since Abby first got into it and in this day and age, if she wants the independence that comes with working and the ability to write something that people will actually read, romance might be the genre that she needs to pivot into.

Elsewhere on Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, Delia deals with the first major crisis from demanding client Ronnie, while Phoebe puts together a family camping trip for her kids and Jo wrestles with feelings of regret and loss after Scott disappears.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on Bravo.

Do you think Jo has seen the last of Scott? What career path should Abby take now that she has the ability to do anything she wants? Will Delia be able to stick with Ronnie despite the drama and prove herself to the firm in court?
