They said there would be an “epic battle” with Doomsday too. Let’s hope they prove us wrong this time.

      No kidding…. :-/

    3. RickSweden! on Apr 21, 2010 12:43 pm

I really hope the “BATTLE” with Zod is not like 2mins long, want more of a fight for like 5-10mins or it will just suck like last season

    4. Superzod on Apr 21, 2010 1:08 pm

First of all NO Smallville-battle did ever take longer than 5 minutes. I really still cant understand why people are complaining so much about the Doomsday-battle last season. In my opinion it was done right. Clark couldnt land a single hit on Doomsday cause he isnt Superman yet and its fricking Doomsday for Raos sake. Clark finds out in the Death of superman-story how to actually hurt Doomsday so not having him land a single hit on Doomsday in the finale last year made every sense to me. And ofc the battle couldnt be much longer. Again this is DOOMSDAY we are talking about here, not Bizarro. The fight couldnt go much longer because if it would have Clark would have been slaughtered to bits and Supermans story would have ended right there. And the 2 minutes that we saw WERE epic. the way Doomsday hit Clark was pretty damn epic in my opinion.

Also its a little hypocritical to be so pissed about that fight. When Clark fought against Zod in “Zod” (Season 6), Clark didnt land a single hit as well and the fight wasnt much longer than 2 or 3 minutes as well. Same goes for his fights with Brainiac or the various fights with Bizarro (though Clark at least landed some hits on those two)and his fights against Metallo? also not much longer. So why are so many people so much complaining about the Doomsday-fight. You people act like all the other fights on Smallville are 10 minutes long and massive superpower-brawls. Smallville has NEVER done this.

Sometimes I wonder if some fans expect Smallville to have the action of 150 million dollar blockbuster-movies. We are still talking about a TV-show here on an ever lower budget and you guys keep expecting action-scenes like in the end of “Incredible Hulk”. Smallville-fights with DC villains have always been short (well maybe except Absolute Justice but that was something very special) because the show isnt about the fights. These fights are just a little preview, a first taste of whats to come in the Superman comic books. Its always been meant this way. Clark isnt Superman yet (Apparently some people tend to forget that little fact here) and therefore on Smallville he will NEVER have fights like he has in the comics as Superman.

So who really actually expects now a 10-15 minutes fight between Clark and Zod which looks like a 200 million dollar superman movie is just downright naive.

Sry that I had to say all that but the behaviour of some fans about that is really starting to get to me.

    5. graydogg51 on Apr 21, 2010 1:17 pm

Superzod, thank you for showing me what it sounds like when doves cry…..

    6. Superzod on Apr 21, 2010 1:27 pm

at least I have some arguments and reasons behind what I am saying. And havent lost sight of those characters and what the show really is about and what the show can and cant do and what they have always done. I made some damn good points and replies like yours are pathetic (sry to say it) because all you can do is bash and insult but dont even bother to actually make some good points of your own to defend your opinion. So really now, whos the one crying? So if you dont have something REAL to say, some good points or arguments to bring to the table like I did just dont write at all. Its a waste of time.

    7. Craig Byrne on Apr 21, 2010 1:37 pm

The same rules as the KryptonSite Forums apply here. Please do not call other people “pathetic” if you don’t agree with their opinions, or call names to one another, or your comments will be deleted in the future.

    8. donnabennett on Apr 21, 2010 1:42 pm

All Clark has to do….is to realize that the series of events may not be taking place……!visions and dreams may or may not be real..more than likely MAY NOT!!

    9. Superzod on Apr 21, 2010 1:48 pm

sry Craig. But I didnt call him pathetic, just his reply. Because his reply was just an attack and not even the attempt of a rational discussion. I didnt mean he was pathetic, just that this form of reply was. And he insulted me too. He called me a dove.

    10. Craig Byrne on Apr 21, 2010 1:51 pm

I get it. But both of you should just respect that you have differing opinions and leave it at that. I get where both of you are coming from. Just seems to be a trend with this fandom that if you’re not of a certain mindset, people go into attack mode with each other and it’s so tiring :(

    11. Superzod on Apr 21, 2010 2:06 pm

yeah I dont like that either. Sadly, its not happening just in the Smallville/Superman-fandom but every fandom with a cult-following. My intention is not to attack or fight. I just am the kind of fan who expresses his opinion very strongly and (sometimes too) passionately but I always do with good points and arguments. You will never just hear me say “That sucks”. I will always give a reason. And I certainly didnt mean to attack a person or to start some stupid online-battle with other users. I was just expressing my view on these things as a dedicated fan of Superman and Smallville and for that I was called a dove. I certainly didnt come here, looking for a fight. I just have a strong opinion.

    12. SuperZod fan on Apr 21, 2010 2:31 pm

I agree with SuperZod’s initial comment… spot on. I didn’t think you were crying about anything… just giving your (strong) opinion about your feelings to their whining about the episode and those in the past. Cheers.

    13. Superzod on Apr 21, 2010 2:47 pm

Thanks^^ Its good to know that they are also fans out there who get my points and understand what I am saying. After all most of it were facts anyway. I mean of course it would heve been freaking cool to have Clark and Doomsday brawl it out like Hulk and Abomination in “Incredible Hulk”. But first of all the show doesnt have the budget for that and second of all I think as a big fan of the Superman comics I would have disliked the scene if Clark would have been able to give Doomsday some serious hits of his own. It just would have totally messed up the history of those characters and would have heavily undermined Doomsdays status in the comics if Clark could already hurt him when he isnt even Superman yet (Since he barely did it at first in “Death of superman” and he was already Superman there!) We already saw in “Bride” when Clark actually TRIED to hit Doomsday that the beast was out of his league which in my opinion showed perfectly the sheer superiority of Doomsday and I am glad they didnt mess that up in the season finale just so they can show a spectacular mega-battle between those two. That battle WILL happen. But not on Smallville and it never should.

    14. seamusberen on Apr 21, 2010 5:29 pm

Great commentary, superzod. I too get a little tired about all the complaining that goes on about SV. To me, the show has always been character driven and to quibble about whether the fights are epic enough seems to miss the point of the show. I actually liked the Doomsday arc and thought it was resolved very well. What amuses me most are the so called “fans” who keep whining that the show has been on too long. SV is truly something special and to make it to a tenth season is testimony to that. No one has done the Superman mythos as good for as long a time as the cast and writers of SV. I know it will have to end sometime soon, but it has been a great ride and I for one will always think of SV as some of the best television ever. Congrats to Craig too for giving us the forum to express our views–maybe we all ought to just be grateful for the SV experience. Superman lives and the myth goes on inspiring new generations.

    15. Katrina on Apr 21, 2010 6:47 pm

I can’t wait to see Smallville but there better be a whole lot of Clark/Lois. I couldn’t care less about what Chloe is doing since she is not his soulmate. All I want to see is more Clark and Lois!

    16. Werido121 on Apr 21, 2010 8:36 pm

Wait, epic battles aside… Perry White is Martha Kent’s new boy friend… what the hell is that??? :O

    17. Dennis Iden on Apr 22, 2010 6:43 am

If for legal reasons Batman and Wonder Woman cannot be shown, they should be mentioned. Otherwise, it is like watching an alternative reality Superman. He and Batman’s origins are only a year or so apart. For SV to evade that background is really not a true perception of the Superman story. As for Perry White and Martha Kent being a couple, I always thought Perry (being older & wiser) should have known Clark’s secret identity. Maybe this well prove to be a great storyline.

    18. plasticeye87 on Apr 22, 2010 7:48 am

Well Martha is single now anyways I can’t wait for the season finale. As for the Doomsday fiasco to each his own I personally thought it was done well. If they did a super battle akin to the comics on the show I’ve would have been annoyed since it undermines Clark being a superhero in the future in the first place. Not to mention all those continuity snarls and plot holes it would have done in the grand DCU canon.

    19. Superzod on Apr 22, 2010 11:49 am

I agree with all of you. You said it best seamusberen :) And I like i that they are fans like plasticeye87 who really see the big picture of the entire superman mythology here. Thats exactly the point. How the hell could Clark even be in Doomsdays league if he isnt Superman yet. If this is about his path to becoming earths greatest superhero why should he be able to fight a villain like Doomsday now? If he could they should end the show right there cause then he must be Superman already. I mean what would be next? A fistfight with Darkseid? These are villains Clark isnt possibly a match against yet and I just dont understand why some “fans” expect that he would and are mightily pissed off if he isnt. Thankfully Smallvilles writers know better and really know their Superman mythology.

As of the plotholes you said it would creat in DCU canon, now many fans would argue that Smallville has done things very different from DCU canon in the past anyway. That always seems to be a big argument. Because those people still dont get how the show works. Smallville is basically a complete re-write of those 10 years before Clark becomes Superman. So they can change anything they want that takes place in that time-window as long as it doesnt clash with the major events and the way the characters are AFTER Clark is Superman. So actually the show doesnt violate the DCU canon. All the changes Smallville is making to the origin story (which even in the comics is revamped quite often anyway) are changes that take place before Clark is Superman. Thats why they can have Lois and Clark meet already in Smallville, thats why they can have Doomsday a fleshly shell called Davis Bloome, have Lois be with Green Arrow, have Clark meet Perry already during his teenage years, make Clark and Lex friends etc. Because it doesnt violate the main canon that takes place after Clark becomes Superman. Superman and Lex are gonna be big enemies, Lois will eventually marry Clark and learn his secret shortly before that, Green Arrow will be with Black Canary, Lois and Clark will be working with Perry and Jimmy at the Planet, Doomsday is only a superbeast with ho human shell and will kill Superman etc. The producers themselves stated that eventually SV is gonna align with the major comics canon. They only change things and do them differently in that time-window where Smallville takes place but eventually everything will line up with overall DCU continuity. Thats why Lois will never learn Clarks secret permanently on Smallville, thats why Lex never truly died, thats why characters like Clark, Lois, Lana, Oliver, Martha, Perry etc. will never be permanently killed off on the show. Smallville can do everything they want – as long as in the end of the show it will all line up with the overall DCU canon.

Thats what makes it so special. Something that has never been done before. Its a re-imagining of the 10 years before Clark Kent was Superman, a complete re-write of that time that in the end lines up with the overall DC canon of the comics (of course there can be minor differences here and there because there are so many comics out there and the writers cant really pay attention to every single last little thing that ever happened in the comics continuity)

And like seamusberen said, we should be thankful for the ride and the experience and should also be thankful to Craig for covering the show so well over all those years.

      Up up and away!

    20. graydogg51 on Apr 22, 2010 4:11 pm

So in other words you are saying don’t offend crying doves? Note to self, leave doves alone. Turkeys and ducks may be okay (better check first), but doves are definitely off limits.

    21. Superzod on Apr 22, 2010 11:05 pm

Maybe you should read again what Craig said about how tiring it is that some people just need to start fights all the time. What were you trying to accomplish with that last post of yours? to provoke me? Color me provoked and get lost. Pu-lease.

    22. Craig Byrne on Apr 22, 2010 11:06 pm

Both of you, cut it out.

    23. Pizzadreamer on Apr 26, 2010 4:06 am

      @Superzod

First please excuse my dodgy spelling!

I totally understand where you are coming from with your original post and your comments about how Clark isn’t quite superman yet so he wouldn’t have been able to face off properly with Doomsday actually made sense from that angle. The problem I have is that, I don’t think that the writers made that really clear. Clark only “fought” Doomsday twice. The first time Doomsday swatted him like a fly. I think it would have been clearer if Clark had then maybe voiced his concern that he wasn’t a match for Doomsday. This I think would have put it into peoples minds that Clark isn’t fully developed enough to tackle such a lethal foe. The expectation then on the end fight wouldn’t have been so high.

Remember that not everyone who watches SV is a comic book fan or knows the history. They is one excellent reviewer on TV.com who’s opinion I really appreciate because he takes the program at face value. I realise that the majority of fans will be comic book fans but it wouldn’t be very business savvy to aim solely at them. Case in point is my hubby who had no prior knowledge of anything Superman (aside from the films) but loves Smallville. He hated the Doomsday ending because he thought it was anticlimactic, after reading that the end battle would be in their words ‘epic’ or (whatever word they used, i forget).

The buildup for Doomsday thought-out the season was fantastic. Most people will agree to that. So this put a certain level of expectancy in peoples mind and this is where the disappointment stems from. Having said that, the marketing team for SV often shoot themselves in the foot with all the things they say are going to happen and with some of the previews. Of course they have to generate interest for the show, but to be quite frank, some of it can be downright misleading. Remember the previews for Veritas or even Turbulence? Both made made it LOOK like Clark was going to fly. People can only take so much of that on a regular basis.

But to be honest Im one of those ppl who was disappointed with the conclusion of the Doomsday arc. With the final fight I wasn’t expecting lots of punches etc. but I was expecting it to be a bit longer. I completely agree with you that for the sake of money they couldn’t have a fight like at the end of the Matrix Revolutions. They could have had Clark regrouping, saving more people etc. any thing to show for longer that he was struggling. Couple of punches then a super leap into the underground furnace did to me come across as a tad lazy. Then Davis dying, Jimmy getting to be right for like 2 seconds and then dying and THEN not being the real Jimmy all contributed to a disappointing finale. And thats for someone who knows the mythos. Now imagine how someone who doesn’t would come away after watching that. Compare this with great ones like season 4’s Commencement. I didn’t really like season 4 because there wasn’t really much to do with the mythos in that season. Yet the finale was great. Then season 6’s Phantom. That fight was equally as short but simply done better, also they wasn’t a build up for Bizzaro he just appeared in the finale, but from the short fight you get a sense of how tough this foe is. Again reinforcing my point about Doomsday’s buildup.

So I think from my point of view has to been in the middle. I can watch it knowing the history but bear in mind that some others don’t. This may help at least understand why people seeming complain about things that to a fan are a little more obvious. Im sure many people understand that SV has a limited budget etc. but maybe then its a case of the PR, managing peoples expectations a little better.

My biggest disappointment with last year’s finale was the – ‘how did you defeat Doomsday, Clark?’ – ‘Um, I don’t know…’ conversation. Never adequately explained. My expectations for this year are therefore not high.

      Love to be wrong though
