Moonlight To Shine On The CW

The CW Network has decided to re-air the CBS series Moonlight on Thursday nights following The Vampire Diaries this summer.

Could a revival be considered? (Of course, star Alex O’Loughlin has a new gig on CBS’s Hawaii Five-O.)

    Here’s the press release:

“MOONLIGHT” TO SHINE ON THE CW
Acclaimed Vampire Series starring Alex O’Loughlin Joins
    “The Vampire Diaries”
On Thursday Nights Beginning June 3

May 6, 2010 (Burbank, CA) — Summer just got a lot scarier on The CW. The network will air the acclaimed drama MOONLIGHT on Thursday nights beginning June 3. MOONLIGHT will air from 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET, following encore episodes of the first season of the The CW’s hit drama, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES.

On MOONLIGHT, Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) is a captivating, charming and immortal private investigator from Los Angeles, who defies the traditional blood-sucking norms of his vampire tendencies by using his wit and powerful supernatural abilities to help the living. In a life-altering twist of fate, Mick was “bitten” 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive Coraline (Shannyn Sossamon). Forever 30 years of age, Mick’s as handsome and charismatic as the day he was “turned,” and he eschews others of his kind who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of like-minded confidantes for company, including the eternally young, wealthy and mischievous Josef (Jason Dohring), a hedge fund trader who relishes his uniqueness, Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living. One night years ago, a single act of kindness changed Mick when he saved a young girl’s life, making him want to be a better vampire. Now their paths cross again and Mick develops a distinctive bond with Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who has grown into a beautiful, ambitious internet investigative reporter. Reconnecting with her unleashes feelings Mick knows he can’t pursue without exposing that part of him that would make him a monster in Beth’s eyes. As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love, he discovers the mysteries and pleasures that a valuable life has to offer.

It looks like Supernatural is moving to Fridays guys!

Fine by me…strengthen the night and get rid of the reality encore. When stations program good shows on Friday and Saturday, people will (gasp!) actually watch!

This show already happened, it was called Angel!!!!

This show also already happened when it was called Moonlight. They’re just reruns :)

Does anyone else think “Supernatural” on Friday is a bad idea? I mean, first of all, “Supernatural” and “Smallville” are likely to end, so putting both on the same night, a night that’s called the “Deathslot” doesn’t make sense since next season, they’ll have to put something else on Friday and hope it does okay on it’s on without “Smallville” or “Supernatural” to help it out. “Smallville” / “Nikita” could have worked. Then, if “Nikita” did well, they could pair it with something new next season when “Smallville” ends.

Also, where would “Nikita” go? After “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” or “America’s Next Top Model?” Those are the only places for it. A new show airing with another show with clashing genres? Is that really smart?

I wish they’d put “Supernatural” on Sunday, with “Nomads.” Then “Nikita” on Friday with “Smallville.” “The Vampire Diaries” on Thursday with “Changelings.” And pair “Gossip Girl” with either “Hellcats,” “90210,” or “America’s Next Top Model.” Then pairing the two left over shows with each other. Then, on another night, “Life Unexpected” and “One Tree Hill” or one or the other/combo of the two with “The Untitled Wyoming Show.” Yeah, doing Sunday night programing is a risk, but I think now’s the best time to try it. Worst case scenario, it fails and “Supernatural” ends as planned and “Nomads” gets canceled or moved to another night.

I actually love the idea of uniting Smallville and Supernatural again. Anything can be better than being paired with crappy Top Model repeats.

Unless, of course, The CW gives up on Fridays entirely, and does SV & SPN on a different night, which I don’t think will happen.

My prediction for the schedule will be that Nikita will get an earlier in the week slot, and Betwixt/Changelings will get Thursdays after the Vampire Dairies. When Nikita will go earlier in the week, of course, depends on where FOX slots GLEE. The CW would be wise to steer clear of that slot.

I loved Moonlight, but I wish CW had grab it before it was cancelled.

    8. Jason on May 8, 2010 12:00 pm

With this glut of decent programs, if I ever see an encore of Top Model again, I will retch. And folks can forget Sunday nights; the network returned that night to the affiliates. I’ll frankly be interested to see what CW does in the afternoon 2-hours, since Tyra is ending her show this month.

Also….don’t write it in stone that Smallville and Supernatural will end after next year. The network will hold onto valuable shows and stars for as long as possible, as they demonstrated with 7th Heaven. And as for trying to find a “compatible” night for Nikita…as I’ve said, I’m skeptical of the entire show, but they seem determined. But I certainly don’t worry whether it’s paired with another spy show, etc.

Tuesdays this year proved that just because you have ONE old soap (90210) doesn’t mean another old soap (Melrose) will succeed. The network has programmed far TOO MUCH of the same thing, which is why they’ve often failed. It takes a show like Vampire Diaries or–hopefully–Nikita to break out of of the same old, same old mold. ABC is learning the same thing with LOST and its many clone/knockoffs. Success of one does not ensure success of another.
