Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954). Spielberg probably took inspiration from the Julie Adams swimming sequence, when he did the opening of Jaws.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). The final warehouse scene really makes one realize the possible wasted potential of this franchise. Those countless crates... what's in them? (Other mystical/occult artifacts?) Who acquired the contents of them for Army intelligence? Doesn't have to be a single person, but many. Spreading across numerous years. A film could be centered around the contents of any of those crates (or ones sent there in the future)... and whomever acquired it. For example, you could have one be acquired by another guy (besides Indiana Jones) in 1932. Another by a woman in 1924. Whatever protagonist you want. Set in whatever year you want.

However, after 40 years of it being built around a single character, who've technically only been played by a single actor (not counting the actors who've played him as a younger or older man. It's not like with James Bond, where they've recast the role, every few years), would this franchise be able to move beyond Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford?

Anna Christie (1930) and Mata Hari (1931). Decided for a Greta Garbo double feature.

The Cocoanuts (1929). Thin plot, but funny bits.

Animal Crackers (1930). Zeppo plays Horatio Jamison. In their previous film, The Cocoanuts (1929), Zeppo also played a guy named Jamison. He doesn't do much in either. No idea why they didn't merge his characters with each movie's romantic lead. Instead, the fourth Marx brother vanishes for large chunks of the films, while the other three carries the films.
