  • Resurrection of the Daleks (Classic era serial)

Wow, this story went along fast. Barely 20 minutes into the first half, the Daleks have liberated Davros. Compare it to the previous Dalek story, Destiny of the Daleks, where Davros was revived at the start of the third part (having been the cliffhanger of the second).

This serial marked a shift. Consisting of two 45 minute episodes, rather than four 25 minute episodes (as had been the standard for a most of the show's run; with some stories being as long as 6-10 episodes). This format was used for the show for the 22nd season.

In the case of this story, anyway, it was a change for the better. They had to do only one cliffhanger and, being only two episodes, the story could unravel faster than usual. You know, when something runs for over 20 years, you need to adjust the show to a new era. Just look at shows from 20 years ago and compare them to shows of today. Sadly, after season 22, they went back to the 25 minute format, with usually 4 parts per story. Potentially moving backwards.

This was the first Dalek story in five years, and it marked the departure of Tegan. It was successful in both respects. Maybe they could've done more build-up to Tegan's departure. But, her sudden choice highlights the horrors that she had seen this day. It was no longer fun to travel through time and space. Over her three years with the Doctor, she's encountered the Master, Cybermen, Mara. Then she encounters the Daleks and the horrors of them (and the death that they bring about), is what makes her depart the Tardis for good.
